Re: Book Hauls!

I picked up The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny because I've heard his name mentioned favourably a number of times on this forum.

Just ordered:

Selected Stories of Manly Wade Wellman #3
Selected Stories of Manly Wade Wellman #4
Stranger on the Heights - Wellman

I'm basically going to be getting everything by Wellman I can get my hands on. Bank account be damned.

I haven't read any of Zelazny's novels, but I did recently read the collection, The Doors of His Face... and it was freaking wonderful. I've since picked up another collection, The Last Defenders of Camelot, which I'm hoping to make a start on pretty soon.

Great Book of Amber. Worst. Character. Ever. I would've given you my copy, HJ, if I'd known somebody wanted it!

Really stoked about this edition of Twinkle, Twinkle, "Killer" Kane, and the others I bought because I thought the covers were very nice.

That's weird. My big find today was Greg Egan's Incandescence. It's a first edition (Nightshade Books, not first first edition) hardcover and, while I don't care about such things and it can't be worth anything special, it's still cool to have picked it up for five bucks in mint condition. Most people abuse their paperbacks so it might have cost me 4+ bucks to get a mangled paperback or 8-9 to get a new one, and that's if I could find it. So I was going to say I was stoked as a sort of incandescent pun, but you beat me to it.

Also, I recently picked up Bypass to Otherness which is a companion piece to your Return to Otherness. I figured there'd be some duplication but couldn't resist getting it. But then it turned out I had everything in it in other collections - or all but one, I forget.

Anyway, Egan's about my favorite contemporary author, so I'm happy.

The one thing that fills me with misgivings, though, are some of the blurbs on the back:

Quote:
The Universe may be strange then we can imagine, but it's going to have a tough tie outdoing Egan.

Immensely ambitions, intellectually exhilarating...
7 out of 9 (7 of 9?) unborked blurbs ain't great - I hope the novel itself received better proofreading.

Like several others here a bit of a Zelazny fan including Amber. The first set of 5 books are the best.

I've not read the collection cited vis a vis The Last Defenders of Camelot.

The one I would recommend for a collection is The Doors of His Face, The Lamp of His Light. To me it is superb.

Also check out Lord Of Light, arguably his greatest single work.

Hope you like Amber.

I'm finding it quite different to anything I've read before - save that the protagonist reminds me somewhat of Karsa Orlong from the Erikson novel House of Chains in that he seems to do or have done dastardly things but I find myself rooting for him nevertheless. I've finished the first two books and am enjoying them - I particularly like Random.

I'm planning on buying another book today, but to mix things up I think I'm going to go either Joe Abercrombie or Dan Simmons, both of whom I've never read but heard good things. Unless the store somehow has Jennifer Fallon's Lord of the Shadows, which I most want (though, seeing as I'm in Pittsburgh and Fallon is Australian, I don't have much hope for that one).

Glad I'm not the only one who didn't like it. I can't remember how far into it I read before giving up, but I just couldn't get into it.

That's the second sons trilogy yeah? Personally my favourite of hers is the Tide Lords series.

Anyway, last day of the borders near me being open, so I picked up 9 books at 50 cents a piece .

The Prodigal Sun - Sean Williams & Shane Dix - Evergence Trilogy (one of my favourites )
Knighthood of the Dragon - Chris Bunch
Destiny's Rift - Sam Bowring
The Fort at River's Bend - Jack Whyte
Fortress of Owls - C.J. Cherryh
A Time of Omens
- Katherine Kerr
The Last Battle - Chris Bunch
The Dragon Revenant - Katherine Kerr
Maelstrom - Anne McCaffrey & Elizabeth Ann Scarborough

Yep. I've also read the Wolfblade and Hythrun Chronicles trilogies - the Wolfblade books being my favourite so far. It's good to know I've got another good series by her to look forward to!

Unfortunately, the book store I went to didn't have Fallon, or Abercrombie, or Simmons! Then I noticed the prices and realised it was a bargain book store of some sort. Decided to wait until I got to Washington DC (I leave here and arrive there tomorrow).

Ah ha! I knew there was someone else on this site who didn't like it! I think we might've ranted about it before... I've definitely ranted about it before and how awful the main character is.

Back on thread... I've held off on the book buying. I'll have to see how much space I have in the new house.

Haha, I had ran out of space, but with some clever rearranging I managed to fit a new book case in one of the rooms. It probably won't last long though...it's already half filled...

Simmons, Abercrombie and Fallon are all good. I can recommend Ilium by Dan Simmons and Abercrombies' First Law trilogy is excellent.
