| Re: Book Hauls! I just picked up a few books on the basis of newly discovered authors that i've very much enjoyed recently. John Campbell's The Lost Fleet: Valient and Relentless. Neal Ashers Cowl and the Technition. (I wanted to see how his stand alone books are before i go on to the Agent Cormac series.) |

| Re: Book Hauls! Recently... The Compleat Angler - Izaak Walton & Charles Cotton *Lovely Modern Library edition with magical black and white woodcut illustrations of this classic Englsih work. Blurb:An immediate success when it was first published in 1653, Walton's classic celebration of the joys of fishing continues to captivate anglers and nature lovers with its timeless advice and instruction. Originally cast in the form of a dialogue between an experienced angler named Piscator and his pupil Viator, the book details methods for catching, eating, and savoring all varieties of fish, from the common chub to the lordly salmon. More than an engaging guide to the subtle intricacies of the sport, Walton's reflective treatise is a graceful portrait of rural England that extols the pleasures of country life. Red Cavalry and other stories - Isaac Babel *A real treat to find this penguin black classic edition of short stories by one of the great short story writers of the 20th Century. Blurb: One of the most powerful short-story writers of the twentieth century, Isaac Babel expressed his sense of inner conflict through disturbing tales that explored the contradictions of Russian society. Whether reflecting on anti-Semitism in stories such as “Story of My Dovecote” and “First Love,” or depicting Jewish gangsters in his native Odessa, Babel’s eye for the comical laid bare the ironies of history. His masterpiece, “Red Cavalry,” set in the Soviet-Polish war, is one of the classics of modern fiction. By turns flamboyant and restrained, this collection of Babel’s best-known stories vividly expresses the horrors of his age. Scaramouche - Rafael Sabatini *Nice Vintage edition of this classic tale with an introduction by Bernard Cromwell. Blurb: When Andre-Louis witnesses the murder of his best friend by an arrogant aristocrat he swears to avenge his death. Forced to flee his hometown after stirring up revolutionary fervour in the citizens, he falls in with a traveling theater company and disguises himself as the character of the wily rogue Scaramouche. His ensuing adventures involve hair-raising duels, romance, treachery and shocking family secrets, all handled with brilliance and wit by this extraordinary hero. |
