| Re: Book Hauls! Today..... The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell - Aldous Huxley *The controversial novellas that were banned for a period of time that nevertheless are regarded as miniature masterpieces, Doors in Perception in particular. Blurb: In 1953, in the presence of an investigator, Aldous Huxley took four-tenths of a gram of mescalin, sat down and waited to see what would happen. When he opened his eyes everything was transformed. Huxley described his experience in "The Doors of Perception" and its sequel "Heaven and Hell". As only he can, Aldous Huxley explores the mind's remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness. These two astounding essays are among the most profound studies of the effects of mind-expanding drugs written in the 20th century. The Black Cloud – Fred Hoyle Blurb: As soon as a strange dark patch in the sky is spotted by a young astronomer, it is clear something is wrong. The huge black cloud is unlike anything he has ever seen – and it's headed straight for the solar system. If it continues on its course, it will block out the sun's rays and wipe out life on Earth. As panic and riots ensue, desperate world leaders assemble a crack team of scientists – including the maverick Professor Kingsley, the pipe-smoking Doctor Marlowe and the taciturn Russian Alexandrov – to stop the cloud. But as they discover more about its true nature, they are forced to rethink everything they know about humankind's place in the Universe. In The Black Cloud renowned astronomer Fred Hoyle blends scientific expertise with a gripping apocalyptic thriller, to create a frighteningly real picture of a planet facing extinction. Wolf Solent – John Cowper Powys Blurb: Often described as one of the greatest English writers of the twentieth century, John Cowper Powys's epic novel Wolf Solent centres around the story of a young man returning to his roots in the West Country after ten years in London. Compelling, romantic and sensuous, it is peopled with memorable characters and filled with vivid, primitive descriptions of landscape. But beyond this powerful evocation of people and place, Wolf Solent is also a meditation on life and death, good and evil, body and soul, combining the earthy and everyday with the spiritual. On The Beach – Nevil Shute *The controversial and significant Australian post apocalyptic novel upon which the well known film of the same name was based. Blurb: After the war is over, a radioactive cloud begins to sweep southwards on the winds, gradually poisoning everything in its path. An American submarine captain is among the survivors left sheltering in Australia, preparing with the locals for the inevitable. Despite his memories of his wife, he becomes close to a young woman struggling to accept the harsh realities of their situation. Then a faint Morse code signal is picked up, transmitting from the United States and the submarine must set sail through the bleak ocean to search for signs of life. On the Beach is Nevil Shute’s most powerful novel. Both gripping and intensely moving, its impact is unforgettable. Home Fires – Gene Wolfe *The latest novel from one of Science Fiction’s Grand Masters, regarded by many as amongst the finest living novelists in America today. Blurb: Gene Wolfe takes us to a future North America at once familiar and utterly strange. A young man and woman, Skip and Chelle, fall in love in college and marry, but she is enlisted in the military, there is a war on, and she must serve her tour of duty before they can settle down. But the military is fighting a war with aliens in distant solar systems, and her months in the service will be years in relative time on Earth. Chelle returns to recuperate from severe injuries, after months of service, still a young woman but not necessarily the same person—while Skip is in his forties and a wealthy businessman, but eager for her return. Still in love (somewhat to his surprise and delight), they go on a Caribbean cruise to resume their marriage. Their vacation rapidly becomes a complex series of challenges, not the least of which are spies, aliens, and battles with pirates who capture the ship for ransom. There is no writer in SF like Gene Wolfe and no SF novel like Home Fires. |
