It's excellent as is almost everything by this author. Stephenson is one of the best contemporary SFF authors out there. There are also a number of established threads here where members quite frequently discuss his work.

@Sergeant-Fox: Weel you're right Buchan is probably best known in the mainstream as a writer of such classic thrillers as The Thirty Nine Steps but he also wrote fiction with supernatural elements including the novel Witchwood and this collection of short stories. J.P. was the one who first alerted me to this collection last year and having that free voucher I thought it an excellent opportunity to check it out...

Re: Book Hauls!

Friend at work lent me Against a Dark Background, then after that I will start on The Last Argument of Kings. But first I have to get through Surface Detail which is good so far.

Yeah it sounded like my sort of thing rather than his Shannara books, which I've not read. Might start on it next.

Re: Book Hauls!

An interesting day for book finds:

Beasts and Super-Beasts by Saki - really old HB, probably a First but there's no date on it.

Ghost Stories by H.R. Wakefield - 1932 First Edition, really pleased to have found this as it's very scarce. No jacket though.

A 1st Edition of Thomas Ligotti's My Work Is Not Yet Done, signed by both the author and the illustrator. Yay! That was expensive though.

And Birdbrain by John Gilchrist - another Robert Hale publication. This one looks really good - it's about a Soviet occupation of Britain.

Walks off whistling...

Re: Book Hauls!

Finally got around to spending some of my Christmas vouchers - and on the subject of finally, picked up a few books I really should have bought and read a fair while back (in one case, a very, very long while...)

The Steel Remains - Richard Morgan
Ringworld - Larry Niven
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman

Re: Book Hauls!

Over the weekend I finished the last unread book on my shelf... first time in years!

So of course today I went and bought a few, hehehe.

Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins
Killer Inside Me- James Thompson
King Solomon's Mines- H Rider Haggard
Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card

Other than Ender's (which I've already read) I don't know where to start!

One would hope so but... any purchase over a tenner causes so much self-doubt in me that there will probably be a price in blood as well. No doubt Ligotti would approve.

Like Gollum mentioned, I don't think you need to worry about this one...

Nice purchase.

Re: Book Hauls!

I purchased the following

Scorch Trials by James Dashner $1
Tales of the Dying Earth by Jack Vance $1
Warded Man Signed ARC by Peter Brett $3
The Dragon Never Sleeps by Glen Cook .50

I also saw first printings of Harry Potter books 1-3 in hardcover, for a few dollars each, but didn't purchase them. Too bad they weren't the UK ones

Re: Book Hauls!

tales of the dying earth - good one.

on a related note, i've been to The Works, on Doncaster's Lakeside and picked up the excellecnt tribute Songs of the Dying Earth, in heardback, and definitely not a BCA edition, for £3.99.

Plus, what looks to be a first edition hardback - earthlight imprint - of Ian McLeod's Light Ages. yours for 99p, guv.

(oh, and they're closing for a refit, so there was 25% off everything. if anybody wants a trade pbk of Neal Stephenson's Anathem for £3ish, better hurry....)
