| Re: Book Hauls! Two quite interesting books today and both discovered by chance.... Gaza Blues (Different Stories) - Keret and El-Youssef Blurb: Inspired by the belief that their fiction can coexist even if their nations appear unable to do the same, Israeli Etgar Keret and Palestinian Samir El-youssef have engaged in a provocative artistic collaboration. In Gaza Blues, Keret and El-youssef have created a collection of darkly humorous tales that reflect the dreams and nightmares of living in Israel today, and in Lebanon during the first Intifada. In these stories an Israeli soldier vacuum seals himself inside an army-issue plastic sack; a woman who fears she has lost her husband's affection superglues herself to her lounge room ceiling; a young Palestinian man deals with life, love and apathy in a refugee camp. Fiercely humorous, breathtakingly original and, above all, powerful, Gaza Blues is a remarkable collection of stories by two hugely talented writers. Niels Lyhne – Jens Peter Jacobsen *Penguin Black Classic Edn. Quite pleased in chancing upon this Danish masterpiece. Blurb: Niels Lyhne is an aspiring poet, torn between romanticism and realism, faith and reason. Through his relationships with six women—including his young widowed aunt, a seductive free spirit, and his passionate cousin who marries his friend—his search for purpose becomes a yielding to disillusionment. One of Danish literature's greatest novels, with nods to Kierkegaard and a protagonist some critics have compared to Hamlet, Jacobsen's masterpiece has at its center a young man who faces the anguish of the human condition but cannot find comfort in the Christian faith. Tiina Nunnally's award-winning translation offers readers a chance to experience anew a writer deeply revered by Rilke, Ibsen, Mann, and Hesse. Last edited by GOLLUM; 2nd January 2011 at 10:16 AM. |

The third purchase is a First edition hardcover The Defiant Agents by Andre Norton, a book that made a big impact on me as a kid. |

I've never read Lichen or Wolfbane and Body Snatchers as you would be aware I only recently purchased in a Masterwork edition. That really is a top class hall though F.E and to source them second hand a particularly superb feat..... | |
