Re: Book Hauls!

Welcome to the Forums....

My own hauls have been quite modest of late, though I did receive a copy of Shadow's Bend this week, and am rather looking forward to this "alternative history" tale of Lovecraft, Howard & Co...

Re: Book Hauls!

Shadows Bend is a personal favourite Gollum. I hope you like it if you do read it. And j.d. tell me what you think.

I bought some books the day before heading for the hospital.
Fudoki by Kij Johnson
The Iron Man & The Iron Woman by Ted Hughes
March by Geraldine Brooks
The Myterious Flame of Queen Loanna by Umberto Eco

Am reading Fudoki. It's beautiful and as graceful as a feline.

Re: Book Hauls!

Hi folks, I'm new here. Just got 20 odd books off Amazon, some of which were fantasy/sci-fi:

Walter Miller - A Canticle for Leibowitz
David Lindsay - A Voyage to Arcturus
Kim Stanley Robinson - The Years of Rice and Salt
Glen Cook - The Black Company
J.V.Jones - A Cavern of Black Ice
Sean Russell - The One Kingdom
Frank Herbert - Dune

I've already read quite a bit of Dune, it's one of those classics I no doubt should've got long ago, and I'm enjoying it so far.

Anyone got any recommendations for which I should read next?

Re: Book Hauls!

I've accumulated the following over the past couple of weeks...

Dragonology - The Complete Book of Dragons by Ernest Drake
Working with Dragons by Ernest Drake
Perdido Street Station by China Miéville
City of Saints & Madmen by Jeff Vandemeer (current read)
Under the Black Flag by David Cordingly
A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates by Captain Charles Johnson
Supping with Panthers by Tom Holland
The Year of Our War by Steph Swainston
Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson (only 2 more to get in this series now)

My partner has developed a thirst for books about pirates so we have a couple more of those on order also.

xx

Re: Book Hauls!

Ada you need to get him a copy of Paul Kearney's Mark of Ran, first in the Sea Beggars series.

Hey that's a nice collection Karsa! Read all of those except Robinson's The Years of Rice and Salt and they're all good to very good reads. I assume you're aware that Cook directly influenced Erikson ala military fantasy? The only one there I'm not a huge fan of is Sean Russell's One Knigdom part of the Swan's War trilogy I read. It was reasonable but never reached any great heights for me. Herbert's Dune is a masterpiece and Lindsay's Arcturus and Canticle for Leibowitz are both very good books. The JV Jones series is very good dark fantasy with reminders of Martin's Song Of Ice and Fire in parts for me as far as the clan aspect goes. She'll hopefully have the final book Sword From Red Ice out by year's end or early 2007.

Happy reading....

Re: Book Hauls!

Thankye sire. I knew about Cook's influence on Erikson, that's largely why I got it I guess. I think I might go for A Voyage to Arcturus next.

Re: Book Hauls!

Even though a 'fantasy' fan, I really enjoyed 'Dune'...so hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Karsa...

For myself, I have just picked up a copy of 'The Last of the Renshai' by Mickey Zucker Reichert and Volume One of 'The View From The Mirror' by Ian Irvine...together just costing $AU12

I read Ian Irvine's series when they were first published and am looking forward to re-reading them

Re: Book Hauls!

Although each book holds nearly 600 pages, I found them very easy to read. So certainly not 'epic fantasy'.

Not too many characters, the storyline was really good with quite a few twists in it, if I remember rightly. The use of 'magic' is often; and well described.

I am sure there are other good aspects in his books, forgotten since I last read it though...

Re: Book Hauls!

From Half Price Books:

Forty Thousand in Gehenna, by C. J. Cherryh
The Fox Woman & Other Stories, by A. Merritt
The Goshawk, by T. H. White
Most Maddening Sudoku -- (yes, I'm hooked)
The Glass Harmonica, by Barbara Ninde Byfield

My husband and I were both thrilled to find the last one (not to be confused with the SF novel of the same name by Louise Marley). We bought a paperback copy thirty years ago and literally wore it out. After it fell apart, I used to keep the loose pages in a file folder, and that's probably still hanging about somewhere, but it's great to have a bound copy again.

Next time I wish to ascertain the fine differences that distinguish a churl, a lout, an oaf, and a knave, or remind myself why it's ill-advised to take a herald to a picnic, I'll know where to look.

Re: Book Hauls!

That's quite an impressive haul, Teresa... And I must admit to "The Fox Woman" being one of my very favorite Merritt tales....
