| Re: Book Hauls! I need to eventually get the various Penguin editions of Hoffmann; I have only a very small handful of his work, including the Dover Best of E. T. A. Hoffmann, and some of the more modern translations are, I hear, more accurate as well as occasionally simply more aesthetically pleasing... and, of course, there's a lot of material in those volume I don't have at all.... Nomadman... yes, getting hold of Ewers is rather difficult (I would still dearly love to have a copy of Vampire from that set of the trilogy published in the earlier twentieth century, especially as I did manage to get Alraune and The Sorcerer's Apprentice), though not quite what it used to be. The problem is that the most recent translation (or what I've read of it when it was being posted on the 'net) simply lacked the verbal magic of older versions I've seen. I believe (though I'm not certain on this) that they are more accurate literally, but -- as I know from reading a few translations of his work done by Ewers himself -- an important aspect of Ewers is his precision in language. He is a descendant of the Decadents, and is every bit as attentive to the mot juste as were they.... |

I wasn't aware there were different possible collections/editions of Hoffman floating around as J.D. may be suggesting but then I haven't even completed my copy yet...so I don't know if this is supposed to contain ALL his stories, best of... does anyone here know? | |

| Re: Book Hauls! Picked up a signed copy of Terminal World this morning from Forbidden Planet. They had quite a few signed books that i wouldn't mind picking up, including three Neal Asher books. |

I've got this out before but I'd like to finish it this time around. British Horror Cinema, edited by Steve Chibnall and Julian Petley Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema by Jamie Russell And also Stories Volume 2, collection of Ray Bradbury's short stories. |

| Re: Book Hauls! Had a bit of store run today. Went there to get 'Small Gods' by Terry Pratchett. As it so happens whenever you really want something...it was waaaaay back in the back of the shelf, higher than I could reach too. Had to get a store employee with a ladder for me...was actually funny. After she dug around there for about 5 minutes before finding the thing, I contemplated how well seen I would've been there if I just put it back on the shelf afterward and pull a "Thank you.Just wanted to see the cover art.". |
