Re: Book Hauls!

I think you will find Witch House a rather odd, but enjoyable, little volume, Nesa. I read it some twenty years ago in the Arkham House edition; it definitely has its charms....

By the way; speaking of odd little books dealing with witches: have you ever read Devil on the Road, by Robert Westall? If not, you should try to find a copy....

Re: Book Hauls!

Of course, "buy" is perhaps not the appropriate word for those books "purchased" with my Amazon credit card....
Still, I shall have to pay for them eventually. My latest haul has been Mr. George and Other Odd Persons by August Derleth, Colonel Markesan and Less Pleasant People by August Derleth, Marginalia by Lovecraft &c, The Folsom Flint and Other Curious Talesby David H. Keller, The Third Grave by David Case and Revelation in Black by Carl Jacobi. I have been tempted to get the Arkham House edition of Clark Ashton Smith's prose poems, but I have heard whispers that a new edition is forthcoming, so I shall wait for that, I think.

Have you read Marias? I'm not sure if we've chatted about him or not, I think he's one of the best novelists around today.

Re: Book Hauls!

GOLLUM ... the Laird Barron you'll have to thank knivesout for. I got it after reading his review. I am looking forward to reading the SFWA collection. It had been remaindered. I have Fantastic Tales but I could not just leave this one sitting there all alone. It had already been damaged some.

JD ... hey, hey I already have to 'really need' list that is long enough to wrap my home up in. You have to go add some more

Re: Book Hauls!

Whoa a Von Kleist!

Things are beginning to get interesting around here....

I have never read Marias but got the book All Souls (Harvill edn. ) on your recommendation. I know about the famous trilogy you're now chasing as we have copies of that here but I'm yet to read anything by him. An author on my "to read" radar for 2010...

Re: Book Hauls!

I'm almost as surprised as you. It is a Canongate edition that seems to be the most definitive on the market, although as you know Penguin Black or Oxford World's Classics are usual my first choice for most classics.

Re: Book Hauls!

Yesterday I returned to the discount bookstore I'd meant to stay away from for the rest of the month. But I managed to restrict myself to only three books.

Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
City of Fear - Alafair Burke
The Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies - John Scalzi

That's an impressive haul there! I'd love to have another copy of Marginalia; though I have nearly all the material in it elsewhere, still there is something about that book (aside from the lovely Virgil Finlay jacket).... Not to mention the lovely photos of HPL's study and the like.... I also have quite a fondness for the two Derleth volumes (or, rather, Derleth and Derleth and Schorer). For some reason, the titles of those (and Ramsey Campbell's The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants) have always appealed to me. Must be something about the combination of hints of genuinely disturbing weird things with a sort of ironic understatement....

Re: Book Hauls!

I've been really good and working my way through the TBR pile and resisting buying any books. Then I remembered I need to get the books for the BSFA awards and read them soon. And while I was getting them might have order a couple of others.
The Gabble Neal Asher
Africa Zero Neal Asher
Ark Stephen Baxter
Yellow Blue Tibia Adam Roberts
The Push Dave Hutchinson
And God Created Zombies Andrew Hook
More arriving next week.

Don't mean to be nosy but is this book expensive? The last hardback of his stories I saw at a used bookstore in town cost around thirty bucks!
