Re: Book Hauls!

Well I finished reading The Picture of Dorian Gray today so figured that was a good enough excuse to buy more books. Just bought about ten mins ago: Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter by AE Moorat and Tales of Terror from the Black Ship by Chris Priestley.

Re: Book Hauls!

Gosh, another lavish weekend haul:

The Book Of Robert E. Howard
The Prehistory Of Mind:
Steven Mithen (This and the next volume are non-fiction books, bought for our own reference and to help with my wife's job - she teaches psychology and something called Theory of Knowledge)
Please Explain: Dr. Karl Kruszelniki
Wilderness Tips: Margaret Atwood
Time Patrol: Poul Anderson
The Last Defender Of Camelot: Roger Zelazny (I've enjoyed Zelazny's novels, but somehow never sampled his short stories, which is weird because I generally see myself as a more of a connoisseur of the SF short story than a novel-reader; a recent exchange with another SF short-story connotative and sparked off the impetus to purchase this volume)

Re: Book Hauls!

I got The Ruins of Earth in the mail today. It's a collection of apocalyptic short stories by Ballard, Dick, Harrison, Vonnegut, Leiber and others. The editor is Thomas Disch.

Dr Karl, as pretty much all Aussies call him (because nobody seems to remember how to pronounce his name) is a literal walking encyclopedia.

He does all sorts of radio shows and tv segments. People just call up and ask him anything and he has a simple, though in-depth answer.

Great guy, and extremely funny to boot.

Re: Book Hauls!

What's the Craig Strete book? Short stories? Genre?

The Asmatsu Ken is not bad, but not a classic, perhaps. I did like it, but it wasn't weird enough for long enough. Laird Barron is a dark lord of the horror short story.

Re: Book Hauls!

For March, I've managed to pick up some of the Dune series (early ones) and started on the Halo novelisations:

  • Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune - all of which I'll tackle after a re-read of the original Dune.
  • Halo: The Cole Protocol
  • Rainbow six (not sf but always wanted to try some Tom Clancy)
However, I'll be some way from reading them, as I'm currently tackling 'Anathem' by Neal Stephenson. It's really rather good once you understand the alternative terminology...

Re: Book Hauls!

Death Chants is a collection of short stories yes.

It came off the catalogue of Porcupine Books run by my friend in London. This is where I get most of my books from. he deals in science-fiction, fantasy and horror. used books.

It's got an introduction by Salvador Dali and it's a pretty unusual collection of fantasy tales. They draw on the legends and cultural background of the American Indians. There's creation myth tales, stories of life and death and some of the relations between the Indians and white people.

As for Asamatsu Ken, I have a 4-volume set of his mythos tales. I suspect they would have been much better for being read in Japanese. The errors in grammar certainly did not help. But all in all it was a decent effort and yes here too, they were not weird enough for long enough for the most part. Still it's a place to start building upon. I do like the cover though.

Death Chants sounds fantastic! That Evangeline Walton book is a great find, too.

Re: Book Hauls!

The Marias and Rodenbach will be of particular interest to me J.P......

The SFWA European Hall of Fame is a particularly fine collection from what I've thumbed through Nesa.

Fantastic Tales edited by Calvino is a superb collection!

Name Le's The Boat won the prestigious (Australian) Prime Minister's Award, so I'll be looking out for your thoughts on that one and Walton's Witch House is certainly a nice addition!

HMMM....another one getting Laird Baron, this will have to be placed at the top of my list.
