Re: Book Hauls!

Well, Nesa, I'm catching up on you; you've picked up several suggestions I've made, now I seem to be returning the favor. I got my copy of Book of the Werewolf in the mail today. I'll let you know what I think of the story you mentioned later.

Re: Book Hauls!

Got another couple of orders I placed a while back: one a replacement for an old favorite that's falling to pieces -- the old Beagle paperback edition of The Lurking Fear and Other Stories by H. P. Lovecraft. This was the edition in which I first discovered HPL, and for which I retain a sentimental fondness despite the textual errors. Second is a non-fiction bit by Robert H. Barlow: On Lovecraft and Life, including a journal he kept during one of HPL's visits to him in Florida. The last is called The Worms Remember, by Ann K. Schwader, and it's a book of dark/horror verse, largely Lovecraftian, but including some other themes as well. I've heard of her work, but not really seen much of it, but from glimpsing over it, I'd say there's some very nice stuff in here. I mean, just the opening of one of the pieces -- "Midnight on the Dark Angel Watch" -- quoted on the cover, is very evocative to me: "The brightest are those who have fallen farthest; / who wear the night like a benediction / twisted & bitter as absinthe kisses."

Yes please j.d. That book had quite a few odd stories in it and the one with the wolf that becomes a woman was very sad.

I've just bought Jasfer Fforde's Thursday Next books. It was a box set and very irresistible.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just picked up an omnibus edition of Gene Wolfe's Wizard Knight duology plus Books 1 and 2 of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle, Quicksilver and The Confusion. I've heard mixed reviews about this trilogy from great to mediocre, so I thought I'd check it out in full myself.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just bought The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, and will be coming in tomorrow. I'm a sucker for hype, and this book does really sound like it will be fun.

Also bought: Paragaea by Chris Roberson, and Thackery T. Lambshead's Pocket Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases. I haven't read any SF in a while so I thought I would get back into it with Roberson's book.

Oh, and I have a few books coming in from Ebay by an author named Alis Rasmussen(yes I know this is Kate Elliott), but I've forgotten the names right now.

Could these books be the Highroad Trilogy?

Re: Book Hauls!

I got quite a few books today:
The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
The Blade Itself - Joe Abercromie
The Stormcaller - Tom Lloyd
Accelerando - Charles Stross
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
Keeping it Real - Justina Robson
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein

And quite a few general fiction books today. As you can see, I'm catching up on some of the 2006 releases this year (I already have the new Bakker and Erikson).

Re: Book Hauls!

Got Elizabeth Gaskell's Gothic Tales in the mail today -- quick response. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, Teresa; somehow I'd overlooked it. I have some of the stories in other books, but not all, so I'm looking forward to this.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just received the last 4 books in Paul Kearney's Monarchies of God series. Someone on the board, Gollum I think, recommended them. Tried the first one,Hawkwood's Voyage, and liked it so I ordered the rest. Looking forward to a good read.

Re: Book Hauls!

Awesome series. Kearney's last book, The Mark of Ran, hints that his new series (The Sea-Beggars) will be even better. The second book, The Earth That Abides, is out in a couple of months as well.

Oh, I got an e-mail about this one from the publisher! It sounds very, very good. I have a $15 Borders gift certificate burning in my pocket and am debating this purchase.

More recently in fantasy, I've bought Naomi Novik's Teremaire trilogy and Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint. Those are the ones that are burning from their places on my TBR pile and will probably move straight to the top of my list.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just received two in the mail:

Tramp Royale, by Robert A. Heinlein (one of the very few of his I didn't have)

The Necronomicon Files: The Truth Behind the Legend, by Daniel Harms and John Wisdom Gonce III (rev. ed.), a book tracing down the various myths, legends, cults, etc. and debunking them with good scholarship (dosed with some wry wit)
