Re: Book Hauls!

I don't need to buy many new books anymore but these were on sale, and with my birthday discount was able to pick up about $35 worth of new trade paperbacks (University Of Nebraska Press)for $12.

Re: Book Hauls!

Hey Dask, that's a sweet haul. I have some of their publications e.g. Lord Of Samarcand.

Howard's boxing stories e.g. Steve Costigan and Wild West tales are the only ones I don't have single volume collections of to date.

I was planning on purchasing one of the Nebraska press edns. either End Of The Trail or Boxing Stories.

The Samarcand book sounds like a winner. Not crazy about boxing but I'm sure Howard does a good job. Wouldn't avoid reading one if I came across it in a collection. I probably even have some in one or more of my Howard anthologies. Have to check that out.

Yes, well I recall his boxing stories aren't rated quite as highly as his other work but as I'm a Howard tragic I still want to complete the Canon this year.

I haven't really gotten into Samracand (Tales from the Orient) yet but of the little I've so far presued it's defnitely a winner.

Re: Book Hauls!

I got The Samarcand book last year, it was a great read. It was REH at his most grim, sombre. The kind of crusade stories, historical fiction i want to read.

End of trail and Waterfront is next for me.

I bought a couple of cheap new paperback hard boiled crime books.

The Cold Spot by Tom Piccirilli
Quarry in the Middle(Hard Case Crime #61) by Max Allan Collins

Re: Book Hauls!

PASSPORT TO PERIL by Robert B. Parker. Not Robert Brown Parker who just passed away and penned the Spenser mysteries, but "the original Robert B. Parker", B as in Bogardus (1905-1955). A Hard Case Crime "rediscovered pulp classic...first publication in over 50 years"...an "extraordinary novel of post-war intrigue." Looks hot.

Re: Book Hauls!

On Howard's boxing stories... while I have not read that many of them, I did read a couple of collections including them, and one collection made up exclusively of such (The Iron Man). I am not a fan of sports stories of any type, generally speaking, but I found these to be quite entertaining, and they showed Howard's usual verve, gusto, and often sense of the tragic (and heroic) in life, as well. (Of course, he also wrote a number of humorous boxing stories, and those fall closer to his Breck Elkins/Buckner J. Grimes tales in nature and manner.) Howard's love of the ring comes through loud and clear, and he most certainly brings all that passion to bear in the life he imbues into these characters....

Re: Book Hauls!

Some of Doyle's boxing stories are oddly entertaining.

Re: Book Hauls!

I read Howard's boxning tale in a sampling page in amazon. Its as vivid, entertaining as his fantasy stories. I was staying clear of his boxning collections before that.

Re: Book Hauls!

Mini second-hand haul...

Snow - Orhan Pamuk *Hailed as both a brave and profound work for our times and one of Pamuk's masterpieces alongside My Name Is Read and Black Book.
Maigret At The Crossroads - Georges Simenon *A classic amongst Maigrets ..or so I've been reliably informed by my agent.
Little Mountain - Elais Khoury *Surreal-like work featuring war-torn modern Lebanon by one her most celebrated writers. *Part of the Harvill classics series.

To pick up....

The Tartar Steppe - Dino Buzzati *Comparable to Kafka's The Castle.

Very nice collection.

Shadowline (part of the Starfisher series) and the DarkWar trilogy are just about the only things I don't have by Glen Cook.

The other titles (Dread Empire) I received in beautifully presented HB edns. Do you have A Cruel Wind too? That completes the current Dread Empire canon EXCEPT for the final omnibus, which after much angst, may hopefully be released this year...we live in hope anyway.

I have the hard cover of A Cruel Wind and I agree that the NSB editions are very nice books.

Good to know the last dread empire books are coming.

The NSB web site lists Darkwar as comming in Omnibus in Fall 2010

Of this shipment I think i'm most looking forward to Shadowline - I really rate what SF i have read by Glen Cook (currently only The Dragon Never Sleeps and A Passage at Arms).
