I remember Steve Duff. Corresponded with him quite a bit, even met him. Nice guy. Don't remember what he said but (unlike me) he wasn't afraid to speak his mind. Even had a short story published in one of those L. Ron Hubbard WRITERS OF THE FUTURE anthologies.

Hmmm. He had a book listed on his webpage If this is Winnetka, You Must be Judy. Curiously enough, there is a street called Winnetka, as well as a very small section of Los Angeles, called Winnetka. Wonder if that is what he is writing about.

That's it! Thank you. Title is similar to the film IF IT'S TUESDAY THIS MUST BE BELGIUM. Bad habit of mine, decades long, getting these two mixed up. Only know it as a short story, not a book. Novel or short story collection? No, he is NOT writing about a street.

Hm, I had a strange feeling you might know him, which is why I mentioned his name. His letter kicked up such a stink that I might seek out the issue. Just out of curiosity, like...

I know what you mean about speaking your mind. I find that the older I get, the more horrified I am about my own ignorance. Eventually I will become a deaf-mute who refuses to mime opinions in case my hand signals are mistaken for body language.

Well, I thank you for that. I may have "gafiated" a little too abruptly to be polite back then but I still think of the old correspondents from time to time.

The one time I got slammed here at the Chrons was enough for me. I brought it upon myself so I only have my own shoulder to cry on, but ever since I type on eggshells.

Re: Book Hauls!

Got quite a nice book haul this weekend. I only bought a single book but a friend of mine from abroad sent me four others to complete my book collection.
As such, I've just received "Reaper Man", "Thief of time" and "Soul music" by Terry Pratchett...I need to see how I can get the books that tie between these ones.
Besides those, got "The fall of Reach" by Eric Nylund. There was a certain discussion on the boards about tie-in books...guilty as charged it would seem hehe. I'm a fan of the "Halo" story-line and I was really curious of the novel. Can't say the first pages have been riveting or anything but meh...

Got for myself "Little Black Book of stories" by A.S. Byatt (I'll admit I have no clue what A and S stand for, it's my first book from this man...or woman). I walked into the library searching for "A clockwork orange", "R.U.R" or "The Turner diaries"...and couldn't find neither so I walked over to the Vintage shelf and picked something after a bit of consideration. This will be my next read after Holmes, which I'm neglecting right now because of my exams.

It stands for Antonia Susan. She's one of my favourite authors. She's generally regarded as belonging to the stable of the Magic Realists. I've almost all of her work. She's been mooted for a Nobel Prize in literature and was recently made a Dame as I recall. A fabulous writer; I hope you like that collection of short stories. I think I posted more on her in the Fantasy Outside Of The Genre thread.

Hope you like it.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just received:
I am legend
Sparrow
2001: A Space Odyssey
Friday

Just realised that I've been reading mostly sci-fi recently. I guess it has to do with most fantasy stories being trilogies or longer. Not really up for those right now.

Edmund Cooper is fast becoming my favourite author, behind PKD. I really enjoy his mature writing. He was definitely not backwards in coming forwards. So far I've only read "Five to Twelve" and "All Fools' Day". Though I have around 7 more of his books to read now.

I think I'll read "Kronk", as I've had that one the longest.

Re: Book Hauls!

OK, final haul for January....

The Stand - Stephen King *Extended edn. Never read it, so it should be an interesting experience.
And The Ass Saw The Angel - Nick Cave *Recommended to me with some minor reservations by one and only Jeff Vadermeer.
The Woman In Black - Susan Hill *Vintage edn.
Kingdoms Of Elfin - Sylvia Townsend Warner *Classic fantasy. This is a HB edn 1977. Nice copy.
The Many Deaths Of The Black Company - Glen Cook *Fourth and final omnibus of this ground-breaking fantasy series.

Picking up....

Our Story Begins
- Tobias Wolff *Selection of 21 classic shorts by the author plus 10 new stories. I have never read Wolff before, so I'm looking forward to checking this out.
