Re: Book Hauls!

Good haul their AE35Unit. I'm sure you'll love "Tao Zero" and hopefully "Left hand of Darkness". I say "hopefully" only because it is quite different, very soft SF exploring themes of gender and it's effect on society.

Re: Book Hauls!

I got my books in. Most are in very nice shape. I'm very happy with Time Out Of Joint, which is an original Belmont PB See the cover here

I'm off to a big secondhand book sale tomorrow (YAY!) and will probably come back with anywhere between 10-50 books

Yea I'm in two minds about that Le Guin book. I've not read any of her books and I think I'll read one of her SF books that I have first (City of Illusions and Planet of Exile are sat on my shelf too)
My other half might enjoy the Left Hand of Darkness tho!

Just to fill you in, all of those Le Guin books are part of what is known as her Hainish Cycle of Novels (taking place in that "universe" ). I've got the complete set and am hoping to read the entire series over the holidays.

I have read Left Hand Of Darkness and thought it was one of the best SF books I've seen dealing with the study of social structure/society. It won both the Hugo and Nebula awards when it came out. It is essentially considered a classic of SF and one of Le Guin's greatest novels.

Here's a list of the Hainish novels in publication order.
Rocannon's World
Planet of Exile
City of Illusions
The Left Hand of Darkness,
The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia,
The Word for World is Forest
Four Ways to Forgiveness
The Telling

There's also numerous short stories she has written in this universe but I don't have them.

Hope that provides a useful context.

Night all....

Well I haven't read many of them myself yet but I understand that YES, it doesn't matter too much what order you read them in as they don't all contain the same set of characters but are rather set in the same Universe.

Cheers...

Actually, I would say that they each stand alone and have very little bearing on each other attall other than being set within the same universe. The common thread between them is little more than a framing device to be honest.

As did The Dispossessed with a Locus Award thrown in for good measure. I am reading The Lathe of Heaven right now and it is my first Le Guin book but I will surely be reading more.

Yes from what I understand that's pretty much spot on.

@Diggler: That's quite a haul you got there....you're taking over my mantle of bulk purchaser I think....
