| Re: Book Hauls! Speaking of PKD, I got my copies of Clans of the Alphane Moon and We Can Build You. Both a first edition P/B's. I am very impressed, as they are also in quite good condition too. |

![]() Wow M.R. James read by Derek Jacobi, that's sweet... I'm a big fan of the Cadfael series he did on TV and am currently revisiting the boxed set. Of course I've got everything translated of Murakami's, so I can already say you'll enjoy that collection. Lin Yutang was a world class translator, so you probably have there the finest example of Lao-Tzu's philosophies including Chuang-tzu's commentaries in English. I look forward to reading your thoughts on these. | |

| Re: Book Hauls! AH....Carl Jacobi, that name will no doubt ring bells with Mr. Worthington. NO Dask is the short answer to that, assuming you are referring to the SFF/Horror writer Carl Jacobi BUT they may well share a common ancestor, the largest % of Jacobis descending from Germany... Anyhow, how come we're talking genealogy all of a sudden?... This thread has a will all of its own.... |

| Re: Book Hauls! Wondered that once myself; the answer is, as Mr. G. points out, No. But it's an interesting idea, isn't it....? ![]() My only problem with Derek Jacobi is his views on the subject of Shakespeare (see below); other than that, he has always been one of my personal favorites, since I saw him in my teens as Claudius.... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/c...his-works.html And I got yet another surprise today, when I received a new shipment from Hippocampus Press. (When Derrick said he was sending along a rather large selection of books, he wasn't kidding.... )The books I found waiting for me were: Lovecraft Annual No. 3: Lovecraft Annual No. 3 [2009] - Hippocampus Press Collected Poems, by H. L. Mencken (ed. by STJ): Collected Poems of H. L. Mencken - Hippocampus Press The War of the Whisperers (a novel of the Sham Cycle), by Adam Niswander: The War Of The Whisperers by Adam Niswander - Hippocampus Press Seven Deadly Pleasures, by Michael Aronovitz: Seven Deadly Pleasures by Michael Aronovitz - Hippocampus Press Blood Will Have Its Season, by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr.: Blood Will Have Its Season Joseph S. Pulver, Sr- Hippocampus Press Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Blood Will Have Its Season (Some of you will note that favorable reviews here are written by such as W. H. Pugmire, Robert M. Price, and Thomas Ligotti....) aaaand... A Means to Freedom: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard (2 vols.) I knew this last was going to be quite a bit but, good grief, these things are huge!!! |

| Re: Book Hauls! Sounds pretty awesome J.D.....especially the Howard/Lovecraft letters. I'm watching Sir Derek Jacobi in the Cadfael box set at the moment. He's excellent. I'm also sure you already know what needs to be known about the other Jacobi...but here's a link I thought you maybe would find of interest? If you've not seen it already... Disclosures in Black Cheers. |

| Re: Book Hauls! Have not read it yet; it just arrived yesterday in the mail. I have, however, heard numerous good things about it, and the reviews are often very thoughtful, which gives me hopes. I have read a tiny handful of Pulver's other fiction, and been impressed, so that also helps. (I blush to admit that I still haven't got around to his novel, Nightmare's Disciple, which I have heard some mixed reviews about -- the main negative review being by STJ, who mentions it in his foreword to the story collection; an omission I really need to remedy sometime soon....) |

| dark and stormy knight | Re: Book Hauls! It appears there is a genuine sequel to DRACULA. Saw it in the new fiction section at Barnes And Noble tonight: DRACULA THE UN-DEAD by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt. Didn't have my reading glasses with me at the time so I couldn't read the dust jacket but I stongly suspect, unlike the two Jacobies, Bram and Dacre are somehow related. Wonder if it's any good? |

| Re: Book Hauls! OK, today I picked up.... Songs of the Dying Earth *Stories in honour of Jack Vance's legacy from a pretty top class field. The Stories Of Francis Wyndham *A bargain purchased for a few dollars as a remainder item. Austerlitz - W.G. Sebald *Winner of the prestigious National Book Critics Award. Think dreamscapes of the holocaust imbued with the spirit of Bergman, Kafka, Proust and Levi from a GREAT writer. The Book Of Disquiet - Fernando Pessoa *From Portugal's most revered but reclusive of poets, the only prose novel developed from the contents of a trunk found following his death that contained over 25,000 items including letters, journals etc. This is recognized as a modern masterpiece, so I'll enjoy investigating. |
