Of course, I'm not saying you won't live that long, only that I can't imagine you won't buy anymore books for ten years in order to clear through them... | |

| Re: Book Hauls! Yeah his short stories were on a whole very good. Ironically most of his best films were based on short stories and novella's. I have been meaning to read the Dark Tower series of books as I have heard nothing but praise for them. |

| Double-stuff Oreos! | Re: Book Hauls! Maze of Death is not the worst Dick ever but it's nowhere near his pinnacle. Still, I enjoyed reading it. The Dark Tower is the only series of books I haven't read straight through (obviously some series I've started are not yet complete...). It gets a bit, tedious in the middle books and the ending was a disappointment for me. *looks round furtively for Hoopy* I haven't enjoyed that much King in all honesty, although parts of the dark tower reach great heights. I like his ideas more than the way he delivers them. |

| Re: Book Hauls! Today I picked up.... A Tale Of False Fortunes - Enchi Fumiko *Fumiko is regarded as one of the greats of Japanese literature (early 1900s). She's best know for the novels Masks and Waiting Years, which I am also lucky to own. Journey To The End Of The Night - Louis-Ferdinand Celine *Written in 1934, this novel is still considered a modern masterpiece and the author a major influence on world literature albeit controversial due to his anti-semitic views. Sarte and Beckett were strong admirers of his. This novel went against the literary grain of the time in its use of rhythm and "fruity" language. This is black comedy fused with an angry come nhilisitc world view but that apparently also shows glimpses of occasional compassion. I'm look forward to reading this for myself. |

| Re: Book Hauls! Celine is... interesting. A lot of his work, apparently, is black comedy. I've only read three or four, and that was some years ago, but he is definitely someone worth reading. His political views are hard to swallow, as are his views on "race"... but he was a very good, if quirky, writer.... |

| Re: Book Hauls! Mean Streets - story collection initially to get the Butcher story Blood Lite - the same as previous ![]() Jack Campbell (John G Hemry) Dauntless - the synopsis was good enough Thomas Sniegoski A Kiss Before the Apocalypse - urban fantasy, seemed worthy to inspect Elizaberh Bear Blood and Iron - the synopsis was good enough Liz Willams The Demon and the City - the first book was interesting enough to pick up the second one Neal Asher Hilldiggers - this completes the Asher books, at least the ones that have been issued as paperbacks (excluding Orbus - 12 pounds for a paperback is a bit too steep for me, waiting for the mass market version) |

| dark and stormy knight | Re: Book Hauls! SCIENCE FICTION IN THE 20TH CENTURY by Edward James. Another history of sf, this one claiming to break new ground (dig new dirt?) by being "the first book to challenge the traditional approach to science fiction as a series of texts and authors." Well, as Hugo Drax once said, "We shall see what we shall see." |
