Re: Book Hauls!

Hit the local op-shops today and managed to get some interesting(?) reading for a total of $10....

SYZYGY by Micheal G Coney. I really enjoyed The Hero Of Downways, so had to get this.

Wanderers of Time by John Wyndham

Terrors Edited by Charles L. Grant (horror anthology)

Stark by Ben Elton

From The Earth To The Moon by Jules Verne

The Lucifer Comet by Ian Wallace

98.4 by Christopher Hodder-Williams

Night of Light by Philip Jose Farmer

The Last Wave by Petru Popescu (not Sci-Fi though had been recommended to read due to an apocalyptic theme)

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

Watership Down by Richard Adams

Not exactly a haul, but received The Elves of Cintra (Terry Brooks) last night in the mail. An Ebay conquest for $8 US new hardback, incl. shipping, and getting ready to dive in.....

Re: Book Hauls!

Have just ordered Restless Nights by Dino Buzzati, a collection of the famed Italian writer's short stories. This is OOP and pretty hard to get hold of at a reasonable price, so I was shocked and elated when I saw it going for sale online for only £12.

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Gotta love Penguin Classics, they only cost $10 each new.

"Altered Carbon" - Richard Morgan. Part of my quest to aquaint myself with more modern authors.
"The Sword of the Lictor" - Gene Wolfe. Volume 3 of the book of the New Sun series.
"Midnight Sun" - Ramsey Campbell. Part of my quest to find my kind of horror.
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" - Ray Bradbury. Part of my quest to read the entire Fantasy Masterworks series.
"When the Sleeper Wakes" - H. G. Wells. I just liked the sound of this one.

Re: Book Hauls!

Have received a copy of Poe's The Journal of Julius Rodman which I ordered some time back. I've only had occasion to read this once, in a rather hurried fashion, so it didn't leave the best impression. However, with my current rereading of all the Poe I can, I thought I'd give it another shot... and found that I could get a rather nice copy for a very decent price (under $5.00); so, rather than try to get it through ILL at this point....

I've read a lot of Coney's books, a very rewarding writer. Favs are Friends Come In Boxes, a very old-fashioned view of the future but quaintly alarming, Charisma, Mirror Image and Brontomek.

I read somewhere that Analog wouldn't publish his late-career stories because the then editor didn't like him. Shocking to have such a great history of books behind you and then find yourself frozen out.

I will definitely try to track down more from Coney. The Hero of Downways was such a good read.

It really is a shame that he was shunned like that just because the editor didn't like him. I think the editor needed a swift kick out the door!

Culture and Customs of Somalia by Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi
Somalia: A Country Study (Area Handbook Series)by Helen Chapin Metz

Intrested about reading about my nomadic ancestors before the colony days changed our history.

Learned that the arabs us called Berberi and the Samal(Somali) is almost 2000 years old in the same country.
