I don't think seeing those covers on your shelves every day would give you as much happiness as the lunches you could buy with the same money.
I wouldn't be too sure about that. Sometimes something like this has an important symbolic effect for a person and, whereas the lunches won't even be a memory, seeing these things will always bring a warm glow because of the associations... much the same as my owning older books from the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, or early twentieth centuries do for me. It all depends on how much such associations resonate with the individual. For some, it counts for nothing; for others, it is one of the joys of life....

So, Thufir -- I'd say it all depends into which category you fall....

My pennys are pretty tight right now too so I shouldn't really be getting any new books but...

...having just seen all five Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy books in Waterstones with shiny new 30th anniversary covers, including a “DON’T PANIC” Do It Yourself Sticker Cover for the first title, I'm beginning to think that a haul may be in order... You may think I'm fickle desiring exactly the same books in simply a new cover but I've pretty much decided to donate my current H2G2 volumes to the nearest charity shop and go buy these newer versions before they sell out. I'm justifying it by saying these are for 'The Collection' - and its one of my favorite stories - and it will bring me joy for years. All thats true for the copies I've already got though.

What do you think, good or bad idea?
Go for it!

Have you tried Books & Collectibles online bookstore and search engine for rare, out of print, antique and used books, maps and prints - Australia for Keith Roberts? They are an Australian secondhand search site, though they have booksellers from all over the world on there.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Meantime I got a copy, from ebay, of Robert's Pavane - the complete edition punlished by Gollancz in the mid-1980's.

So that's my next read.

Re: Book Hauls!

hehe well thanks for the advice guys, that was very helpful. I think I know exactly what to do now... I'll keep the old one's and get the new ones too - I could do with abit of prosperity.
Then I'll lend out the old ones to all my friends as an expression of my love for books as I bask in the nourishing glow of the new covers... And if I get at all hungry during this wonderful time I'll chew on my fingernails in anticipation of the sixth book that's coming out - Will it be any good? And how will it look sitting next to two different versions of the originals?... Will it match???

This shortish book has received some very favourable reviews. Considering it is set in the land of OZ I'm tempted to see what all the fuss is about...

Yes, I assume there must be something particularly effective about it seeing this is a purchase for my course.

Re: Book Hauls!

I bought a really old, albeit beat all to hell, Brueder Grimm Kindermaedchen book at an antique market - I mean, really old - has no date inside, but I bet I can research to find it. It's really neat.

Re: Book Hauls!

Snapped up a copy All Fools Day by Edmund Cooper. I love P.A. fiction and had heard through these forums that it's worth a read.
