Is that a rare book or an in printed easy to get collection ? Let me know the quality of the book dask. Its very interesting sounding book. Several authors i wanted their sf like Poe,Bierce,London.
Seems fairly available. A quick (actually not so quick with my machine) check with Amazon showed 32 new and used, as low as $4.85 and as high as $98.82. Mine is a 1978 revised edition Oxford University Press paperback in what looks like near mint, unread condition with that sturdier than normal cover paper. Cost me $4.95 in a little bookstore across town.

99.9% sure I've zeroed in on the 1974 Ballantine paperback of AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. You may remember this run, there were at least six of them, pure black backgrounds with fantastically bizarre faces ready to bite you if you looked away by cover artist John Holmes. The stories are: "At The Mountains Of Madness"; "The Shunned House"; "The Dreams In The Witch-House"; "The Statement Of Randolph Carter".

Oh, you bet I remember them; and (save for textual problems which I've learned about since) with a great deal of fondness... which is why I've still got copies of 'em on my shelves. There were, indeed, six of them -- The Tomb and Other Tales; At the Mountains of Madness and Other Tales of Terror; The Lurking Fear and Other Stories; The Shuttered Room and Other Tales of Horror (which is actually by Derleth, though published under the joint byline of HPL & AD); and the two volumes of Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. They were reprints of what was originally an eleven-volume set put out by Ballantine's subsidiary, Beagle, under their Boxer imprint, which also included: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Lurker at the Threshold (another Derlethian piece published under the joint byline); The Trail of Cthulhu and The Mask of Cthulhu (both by Derleth), and a selection of his revisions, The Horror in the Museum and Other Revisions. And if you think the Holmes artwork was strange, you should see some of the covers for those (yes, I've got that entire run, too). There used to be a site which had reproductions of them all, but only one is showing up now -- the last, on sale at Amazon:

Amazon.com: Nine Chilling Tales from The Horror in the Museum and other collaborations (The Arkham Edition): H. P. Lovecraft, Elizabeth Berkeley, Hazel Heald, William Lumley: Books

I first discovered HPL through a combination of the Beagle Tales, the Arkham House edition of At the Mountains of Madness and Other Novels, and the Beagle edition of The Lurker at the Threshold... and there was no turning back at that point....

Sorry for the ramble, but your mentioning that particular book brought back some very good memories.... Thanks....

Hey, I've actually got one of them: THE TRAIL OF CTHULHU by Derleth. No artist is credited but psycho cover is right. Even the photo of HPL on the back gives me the creeps. Looks just like a Ballantine except for the Beagle Boxer logo. Maybe it's their edgy/crazy reader division.

Re: Book Hauls!

I went to my favourite book pusher, planning to buy 3 books and leaving with 8. To be fair, two of them was at a very reduced price and when it turned out that one of those two was damaged, he gave me that one free. Well, my haul (and reasons) was:

The Forgotten Beats of Eld by Patricia McKillip - my main reason for going to the shop. Recommended in the chrons.
Anansi Boys and Stardust by Neil Gaiman - the other two books I had planned to buy. Anansi Boys was specifically recommeded to me elsewhere.
Ubik and Now Wait For Last Year by Philip K. Dick - I had thought of buying these before, but never gotten around to it until now.
The Way of the Shadows by Brent Weeks - the whole trilogy was on display and looked interesting enough to give the first book a try.
Song in the Dark by PN. Elrod - ehm- it was very cheap and it has vampires in it!
Keeped of the Ring Also very cheap and also includes vampires. This is the one they decided to throw in free, since it turned out to be slightly damaged. Something, I hadn't noticed, myself; it's nothing that a little glue won't fix.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just bought "Star Wars Fate of the Jedi: Abyss."

I must say that Leia looks superb on the cover. Clearly in the SW Galaxy, their moisturisers clearly work.

I enjoyed Perfume (both book and the film). Haven't read anything else by the author. Let's know what you think about Mr. Sommer when you are done.

Just ordered pTerry's Nation pb.

I guess it's because we both like a bit of vintage SF...

Re: Book Hauls!

A matter of life and death for me. Finally got round to buying Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, along with Nick Cave's new novel, The Death of Bunny Munro.
