| Re: Book Hauls! While out buying a few groceries, I did something I seldom indulge in these days: a strictly impulse buy for a book. In this case, Stephen King Goes to the Movies. It's been quite a long time since I picked up a book by King (either to buy or to read), but once in a while, it seems like a good idea and, as I no longer have the stories in this one (though I used to have a few of them), I thought I'd just pick up something a bit lighter-weight (so to speak) than my usual diet these days.... |

Although new introductions are always good. I like King's introductions. Tell me how you get on with it, J.d. 1408 and the Shawshank Redemption are probably two of my favourite short King stories. |

| Re: Book Hauls! In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan Le Fanu The Casebook of Carnacki the Ghost Finder by William Hope Hodgson The Ten Thousand by Paul Kearney The Cutie byDonald.E Westlake Wordworth editions might not be the best quality paperback books/collections but getting In Glass Darkly and The Casebook of Carnacki the Ghost Finder at the total cost of what a cheap new paperback cost is too good. |

| Flaming Poltergeist | Re: Book Hauls! I like those Wordsworth editions (I assume they're the same ones). Very cheap, classic horror books. I think I also bought In a Glass Darkly and The Devil Rides Out, some Ambrose Bierce collection, and various others. Too tempting and inexpensive to resist. |

| Re: Book Hauls! Good to know I'm not the only one that thinks about that kind of thing... there are books I've bought 3-4 times because I stumble upon a different edition with cover art I like better, hehe. |

As for the specific titles you mention... I look forward to hearing your view on In a Glass Darkly (which is a rather sneaky little collection, in some ways), as well as Carnacki.... You had asked, a few pages back, about humorous stories by Irving. That's rather difficult to answer, as the bulk of his work has at least a gently satirical edge to it; and nearly all (with a few rare exceptions) all of his fiction is of a humorous cast. When not that, it's of a retrospective, somewhat nostalgic cast; the few exceptions are just that: exceptions. His nonfiction,* such as his books on Washington, Columbus, Bonneville, Astoria, etc., are a different matter..... *I qualify the use of the word here, because it has been shown that Irving -- like many a biographer or reporter of his time -- was not above including a good tale about the subject, even if it had scant (or no) basis in fact.... | Re: Book Hauls! I have all of the wordsworth "horror" series to date excepting those I've got covered by other means, so it will be interesting to read your thoughts on these Conn as there's many of those I've not yet read. Yes, I was aware of those controversies JD points out (I think he pointed them out to me) but not so much at the time of purchase and even then to be honest the cost and convenience of purchasing them off the shelf in Melbourne may have been too strong a temptation! Call me Faustus then... ![]() Happy reading. @Lady Of winterfell: Those are really nice covers, well done!... |
