I seem to be getting a lot of mileage out of that cover art -- although most people mention the dragon.

Post Re: Recent Buys

Working at a place that provides a monthly book allowance goes a fair way towards sustaining a serious book habit.

Recent buys have been ... Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman, Shadow of the Wind by
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino.

Am also always on the lookout for any Lovecraft collection I don't have yet or even different editions of the same.

Re: Recent Buys

Lovecraft is best dived into preferably on a nice sunshiney day when you are sure there could not possibly be any shadows in odd places. Three volumes is a good way to start.

I've also taken the plunge. A lot of you guys are always harping on about HP Lovecraft (and I've never really been a follower of the Horror genre) so I've ordered three volumes of his work.

You could say it's Horror For The UnHorrified

Hi Nesacat, nice to see another Lovecraft fan on the boards.

I've read the Kostova and Calvino books, have the Hoffman copy on order from a local dealer but am not familair with Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, can you possibly ellucidate its contents for me?..

OH and Welcome.....

Re: Book Hauls!

My last trip to a used bookstore netted the following:

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
The Merchants’ War by Frederik Pohl
Idoru by William Gibson
The Reality Dysfunction, Part 1: Emergence by Peter F. Hamilton

I’m particularly intrigued by The Reality Dysfunction, but I want to find Part 2, and possibly others of that series, before I start reading Part 1.

Re: Book Hauls!

You can get it in bookstores in North America and sometimes (surprisingly) Australia, but in the UK it's only available online kyektulu.

Re: Book Hauls!

Actually I see many books by Hamilton filling Australian new and used bookstores including Reality Dysfunction.

Cal/Rane has been urging me for a while now to check out his current? Commonwealth Saga series, so I might just take the plunge before too long.

Does this have anything to do with Jerome K Jerome's Three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog)

I got this book because it won a Hugo back in 99, but I don't know anything else about it. The dedication page references Three Men in a Boat, but that's all I know for now.

Re: Book Hauls!

I've just had a birthday and as a result hauled more books.
Ursula le Guin's 'Earthsea' books;
Anita Desai's 'In Custody' which I had heard so much about for so long, and I've had on my wish list for ages and now I can finally read!
G.K. Chesterton's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much', which was the last remaining Chesterton mystery or drama for me. Now Chesterton will be done, and I will have to move on.

There was a special offer on (last week) at the book club I am a member of and I've sent for -

Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Grass for his Pillow and Brilliance of the Moon by Lian Hearn

Havent' got them yet but eagerly awaiting them

I recently bought all of mark robsons work: the dark weaver legacy and the start of the imperial series, and also i bought sabriel, lirael and abhorsen by garth nix aswell,
