Re: Book Hauls!

I got three books that I have been looking for at my local library. Alan Campbell's (who was Born in my home town actually) Iron angel book two of a strange sort of series called the Deepgate codex, kind of China Melville, with angels, loved the first book so was happy to pick up book two.

Small Favour, latest in the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. A series about a modern day wizard, who just seems to be up against the whole supernatural world and some of the mortal world. Very funny in places but also a serious undertone. The Billy goats gruff almost ended me!

And Empire of Ivory by naomi Novik, third in an alternative history of the Napolionic Wars in which Dragons are used as weapons, I loved the first two of this series and am really looking forward to reading this one!

I haven't run across any myself, but perhaps someone here who is more in touch with things has.

DD -- let me know how you get on with these. Several of them are what I would call a mixed bag, but nonetheless I have a fondness for them, and there are some real gems in there, as well. (I'm not including The Totem, as I've not yet read that one....)

And I received the new collection of The Sleeping Sorceress, by Michael Moorcock -- the third in the set of Elric books being put out by Del Rey. Once again, presenting the stories in the order they were written, and including some interesting material connected to the series....

I love Ovid's Metamorphoses. It's one of my favourite texts, such a brilliant slide through the many mythic transformations. Hope you enjoy it.

Re: Book Hauls!

Took a trip to Hey on Wye and got a load of bargains, fantasy and other. Newest books are first two Scott Lynch, a stack of Dean Koontz, sold old copies of the Dune books that are almost as old as me, and a book by Joe R Lansdale who is such a talented writer and yet I don't hear a lot of people talking about him.

Re: Book Hauls!

Isn't it a Lumley day to be caught with a brain? At least that's what I thought when I saw all these Brian Lumley books at Goodwill last weekend. Didn't have the sense to get them when I first saw them but when reason returned a few hours later and I went back they were still there. And here they are: Psychomech; Psychosphere; Psychamok; Blood Brothers; The Last Aerie; Necroscope II: Vamphyri!; NecroscopeIII: The Source; Necrosphere V: Deadspawn; Necroscope: The Lost Years; oh, and Time Out Of Joint by Philip K. Dick. All in good used condition and all 69 cents each. Kind of like an early Christmas present.

I will.

The Hastur Cycle looks like it is the most distinguished of the bunch, and I've already read a few of these stories in other collections, namely the Chambers and Bierce stories. It seems like it contains the most "classics" by well known authors.

I purchased The Totem based off of the Morrell story -- Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity -- I read in the Prime Evil anthology. The story fantastic, and reminded me in many ways of TED Klein's Dark Gods. It is somewhat Lovecraftian in its themes, but it is not a pastiche of HPL's prose.

Have you read that?

Yeah, and in particular that Morrell story, Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity.

I'm curious to hear what you think about it.

Talking of charity shops, I just got the complete,'Belgariad,' for a fiver. After 20 years, the old ones were falling to bits.

Re: Book Hauls!

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
The Guards by Ken Bruen
Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö
Ewa Morenos fall by Håkan Nesser

Three interesting crime books and a SF classic im very pleased with my unplanned visit to the bookstore. I was thinking vaguely about a good real vamp book and some good crime books.
