Re: Book Hauls! Just picked up the first two books of the Conquerer series by Conn Iggulden. Been on a real Alternate History kick lately so I picked up some of Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series. Reading the first one 1632 and realing enjoying it. Also have a bid on a bunch of Harry Turtledove novels. Also just picked up Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind. I recently bought and read The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie and thought it was fantastic. It was very fresh and enjoyable. Can't wait to see what is forthcoming from him.

Re: Book Hauls! I have been eyeing that series for a while. Make sure you post in the Historical Fiction sub-forum when you're into it, please? I could use some feedback before I shell out my hard-earned dough.

No one imo does historical important characters and their caotic times better. Wolf of the Plains makes the steppes and the mongol way of life come alive vividly. Its very historical correct too compared to his Ceasar series in that its based more on what they know about Ghengis Khan. | |

Re: Book Hauls! Thanks Conn. I'll give it a try soon. Just picked up at the 2nd hand shop, in hardcover, 1st editions: Mistress of the Empire, Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts (now I just have to find Daughter of the Empire and Servant of the Empire in hardcover); Hood, by Stephen R. Lawhead; A Song For Arbonne, Guy Gavriel Kay (replaces the one that got damaged in a flood in 1994, at last!).

Re: Book Hauls! Speaking of M. R. James, I just ordered his biographer Michael Cox's second novel The Glass of Time which is the sequel to his stunning debut The Meaning of Night - a fine pastiche of 'Victorian sensational fiction'. Anyone likes Wilkie Colins will enjoy that book. It may not have much Colins' subtle humour but darker, more passionate and complex. It's one of the books that haunt me long after I finished it.

Re: Book Hauls! Now, now, Mr. G -- don't you know it's unseemly to gloat....? ![]() There are a few titles there (in the Wordsworth series) I've not seen yet, but I may look them up.... Congratulations on the haul... you've got some very, very good reading ahead of you.... Meanwhile, I received a piddling two books in the mail today: Strange Tales, by Hans Heinz Ewers (edited by Steve Flowers, and having quite a nice representative group of his shorter works) Exit Into Eternity -- Tales of the Bizarre and Supernatural, by C. M. Eddy, Jr. (not exactly a great writer from what I've seen, but of interest to me from the Lovecraftian angle....)
