Re: Book Hauls!

I know what you mean. It's the reverse this time - since I'm currently trying to read the Discworld books, I've bought Moving Pictures today, and I met up with my sister for lunch in town. She hasn't read it yet, so I'm under strict orders to lend the book to her as soon as I've finished.

Re: Book Hauls!

On lunch today I walked into a book store, and now my head hurts.

HA!

Anyhow, I found a nice used copy of an old Penguin paperback of Ballard's Terminal Beach - only $2.

Luckily, I had $2.35 left from lunch.

I bought it.

Re: Book Hauls!

  • Deepsix by Jack McDevitt PB ($7.48) Really enjoyed Engines of God, and I finally found the next book in the series out somewhere and I don't normally pay full price for books, but I couldn't resist. I usually buy a new book once a year, and this is probably this year's unless I see something I REALLY have to get.
  • Omega by Jack McDevitt HC ($1) I know this isn't the next book in the series, but I had to pick it up at the bargain price. The local used bookstore gets rid of hardbacks as fast as they can once they're about a year old. I saw Chindi a long time ago and regret buying it now.
  • Conquistador by S.M. Stirling HC ($1) The premise for this story has always intrigued me and I really enjoy the cover art. I hope it's a good read.
  • Stations of the Tide by Michael Swanwick TPB ($2) I enjoyed Bones of the Earth and some of his short fiction, and I've read nothing but rave reviews about this one.
  • Wulfsyarn by Phillip Mann HC ($1) The cover flaps caught my eye, and both reviews on Amazon are 5 stars, so what the heck?
There are a couple of more I got out of the free bin. I had never heard of them, but they looked worthy of a read.

Dresden Files - #3

This looks to be a good afternoon.

Re: Book Hauls!

My father just visited with a late birthday present. The entire Histories of Middle Earth collection:
  • The Book of Lost Tales vol. 1
  • The Book of Lost Tales vol. 2
  • The Lays of Beleriand
  • The Shaping of Middle-earth
  • The Lost Road and Other Writings
My "on-hand" to-be-read pile now has 1500 pages more than it did when I woke up this morning!!!

Nice set, that. I'm assuming this is the paperback collection of the first five books -- the entire History of Middle-earth is even longer, being twelve hardbound books (some of which are quite respectable in size). If you enjoy this portion, you'd probably also enjoy the rest....

The History of Middle-earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the meantime, congratulations!

Re: Book Hauls!

Correct, JD; it is the paperback collection of the first five. Pyan had forwarded the rest earlier in the Trivia thread...need to rein in my enthusiasm a bit before posting, it seems!

No, I wouldn't say that; as noted, it's a very nice set, and a good spot for breaking off into a subset; just thought you might also be interested in the rest of the volumes as well....

Just finished The Lord of Castle Black - having overcome my initial resistence to the non-Vlad books I've been really enjoying the "Paarfi" books recently
