Re: Book Hauls!

Well, I just received the last of the Wordsworth books for the time being (until they put out the new Howard collection The Haunter of the Ring, anyway):

Sweeney Todd; or, The String of Pearls (Anonymous)
Couching at the Door (D. K. Broster)
Children of the Night: Classic Vampire Stories (ed. David Stuart Davies)
The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories (Louisa Baldwin & Lettice Galbraith)
Not Exactly Ghosts and Other Stories/Fires Burn Blue and Other Stories (Sir Andrew Caldecott)
To the Devil a Daughter (Dennis Wheatley)
Gothic Short Stories (ed. David Blair)
and The Temple of Death: The Ghost Stories of A. C. & R. H. Benson

On that last... I've read a few scattered pieces by the "other" Benson brothers before, but never been terribly impressed; they were entertaining, but lacked the "punch" of E. F. Benson's better supernatural tales. However, I've heard some good things about some of the selections here, so decided (especially at the price I got it for) to give this a chance)....

Re: Book Hauls!

Sounds like a splendid haul JD. Wordsworth is certainly a blessing to many a book collector and reader.

Re: Book Hauls!

Indeed. With a lot of the "classic" supernatural fiction they're putting out, they are making available quite nice (if more ephemeral) editions of the material otherwise only available through such specialty houses as Ash-Tree Press and Tartarus Press, which produce beautiful books well worth having, but DO tend to be quite pricey....

Wordsworth put out excellent and affordable works across the range like Austen and Brontes to Wilde and as JD says supernatural literature... I've got the Wheately and Broster listed there.

Re: Book Hauls!

Recently found a new used book store in a nearby town and picked up an omnibus of the 10 volumes of Amber. I haven't read any of these yet, but I've had enough recommendations for them to be curious.

Moon of Three Rings is one of my favorite Andre Norton books. There are several followups to that book, but I don't remember offhand what they are.

Todays aquistions:
Lucifer's Hammer - Niven, Pournelle which is half the thickness but almost the same weight as
The Dreaming Void - Peter F Hamilton and is heavier than
Troy Fall of Kings - David & Stella Gemmell but about the same weight but smaller than
The Prefect - Alastair Reynolds

And no I dunno why either.

Re: Book Hauls!

Just picked up the following on eBay:

Williamson: The Humanoids
Sterling: Islands in the Net
Silverberg: Dying Inside
Delaney: Einstein Intersection
Blish: A Case of Conscience
Anderson: Tau Zero

I have read three of these before, but I got the Eastons for my collection. Yippee!

Very nice haul there, Omphalos... The Humanoids holds up rather well, I thought (though I was disappointed with The Humanoid Touch); "With Folded Hands" still delivers an intense chill even after all these years! All the rest are quite good, too, though I will admit that A Case of Conscience was one that had to grow on me a bit (especially the ending). Now I'd put it high on my list of thought-provoking sf on the theme of religion and science....

Hate to do this Mr. G, but shouldn't that be Xiccarph? At any rate, very nice books, and the Gallardo artwork is a decided plus....
