Re: Book Hauls!

Ooooh! Brilliant, Tal! I'd love to get my hands on The Earthsea Quartet.

My latest haul... well, same as Ace's last haul, but a bit more over the top, methinks.

"The Magic of Recluce," "The Towers of the Sunset," and, "Magic Engineer," by L.E. Modestitt Jr.
I won an eBay auction of the first 11 Saga of Recluce books, and they came today. Just over £30, altogether.

The Magic of Recluce
The Towers of the Sunset
The Magic Engineer
The Order War
The Death of Chaos
The Fall of Angels
The Chaos Balance
The White Order
Colors of Chaos
Magi'i of Cyador
Scion of Cyador

It's not bad; Bloch is a good storyteller and I've enjoyed most of the pieces so far. The Weird Taylor was a particularly gruesome and well-wrought tale.

Incidentally, this was one of the stories he adapted for Thriller, hosted by Karloff. Though the ending there was something you could see coming from early on, the way the final lines (spoken by Hans) were delivered (combined with a superb score by Jerry Goldsmith) was absolutely perfect: a blending of a touching childlike innocence with a very strong chill of such sentiments coming from such a source. If you can find a copy of that episode, I'd recommend watching it....

Re: Book Hauls!

And completing the set: The Year's Best Horror Stories: Series II, ed. by Richard Davis.

Also received a copy (sans dj, unfortunately -- the ones with, in good shape anyway, are a bit too expensive *sigh*) of And the Darkness Falls, edited, with an introduction and notes, by Boris Karloff....

Although the ending was, in hindsight, fairly predictable, the telling was such that I found myself caught up in the events and genuinely chilled by the final scene. The same with The Devil's Ticket (the clue's in the title!).

Thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Book Hauls!

Thanks to my reading moods that fixate on certain genres for a while im on a high when its about reading political/spy thrillers.

After The Jackal inspired to more of the genre at the moment, im reading both The Eye of The Storm by Jack Higgins and Bourne Supremacy by Robert Ludlum.

Higgins book is a pale copy of The Jackal but Bourne one is classic Bourne stuff even if Ludlum as usuall tend to be a bit too much melodrama sometimes.

For some reason I couldn't really get into the Bourne books. I absolutely love the movies, but maybe I should try again sometime to read the books. As I remember, I found The Bourne Identity quite confusing at the beginning and it kept jumping around. But it's been awhile so I could be way off base.

Re: Book Hauls!

From my local used bookshop:

The Dragonbone Chair - Tad Williams
Magician: Apprentice - Raymond Feist

I have been trying for awhile to get The Dragonbone Chair, so I'm excited that they finally had it. It seems for every book I finish I find 2 more to add to the list.

That's what happens when you read the Chronicles.

Re: Book Hauls!

I know, I know! It's a good thing though, I've been introduced to so many good books. But sometimes looking at my To Be Read pile......I have set a daunting task for myself.

Re: Book Hauls!

The Dragonbone Chair is good it may take you a little while to get into it due to the fact you get a lot of background info for the first 200 pages or so, then it just flies.
