He's a New Zealander and professional map maker. It was his first series and not too bad. A bit too Tolkien for my liking but a reasonable first effort and he cetainly knows how to make good use of his maps in the story.

The other 2 I can happily give the tumbs up to.

yeah, they have an interview in the back of the book and i saw he professionally makes maps. makes sense. i've never seen maps like those in a fantasy book before. i love a good map, so i had to grab them up. good to hear the story is passable too. thanks for the info!

Re: Book Hauls!

I must admit that I have trouble picturing HoB in graphic novel form having anywhere near the power of the prose version, for the simple reason that so much of the prose version was adumbration rather than outright description or statement. Still, I'd be curious to see the thing...

I'll also be curious to hear what you think of some of the tales in Horror in the Museum -- though I'll warn you that some may require a rereading in order to appreciate. "The Mound", for instance, may not strike you at first, though a rereading may bring out for you the truly amazing power of this odd little novella.

As for Blood -- watch out for that second section's change-of-style... it's a dilly! If you're like me, you're likely to think Moorcock flipped his lid when writing that... but it all makes sense, by-and-by...

Re: Book Hauls!

I'll let you know how they all handle JD. I too was a little suspicious of HOB in this format but it's one of the reasons I wanted to give it a try. I seem to recall Nesa had a copy of this....

I'll bear your comments in mind when reading the items in that collection.

I meant to ask you why did HPL use the pseudonymn he did for the 2 co-authored works that appear? Perhaps you should post a reply in the horror section.

Looking forward to meeting Neil Gaiman this evenining, over and out....

Re: Book Hauls!

GOLLUM - Just finished reading Strange Pilgrims and they certainly don't come any stranger. Have been looking for House on the Borderland as a graphic novel for some time but have yet to find it. Ah well, the quest continues. Am listening. Definitely listening.

Like JD I'm also curious about your take on the tales in Horror in the Museum. JD is right though about The Mound. I needed to re-read it.

Roverandom - Here is what Amazon has to say:

Begun in 1925, this fantasy was roughly finished later, but set aside in favour of sequels to The Hobbit.

Here, at last, two Tolkien scholars present it, with five illustrations by the author sandwiched between a long, minutely detailed introduction and padded but sometimes illuminating endnotes.

Changed from a live dog into a toy after incautiously biting a wizard, Rover is dropped on the beach by his young owner, where he meets a second wizard who sends him on a gull's back to the Man-in-the-Moon.

Sporting wings and a new name, "Roverandom" irritates the Great White Dragon that causes lunar eclipses and visits a valley where sleeping children gather for pleasant dreams, among other places, then returns to Earth to beg the first wizard, a bumbling sort who has since married a mermaid and moved under the ocean, to make him a real dog again.

Despite a wandering plot and minor inconsistencies, the old Tolkien magic is here in full force: in evocative names, glimpses of supernal events, and wonderfully exotic locales seen through the eyes of a comfortably familiar character.

Enthusiasts will pore over the notes, but the story stands well enough on its own as an incidental piece from one of our century's great literary imaginations.

I'll answer your question on the pseudonym in the HPL section this evening, when I have a bit more time. Incidentally, the Elizabeth Neville Berkeley name is also a pseudonym, for amateur poet Winifred Virginia Jackson. That, too, I'll go into a bit later on....

Thanks, I knew they were both pseudonymns but I'll be interested to read your insights.

@Nesa: That Tolkien book sounds great, gotta get a copy now! HOB I'll try to read over the weekend so I can provide some feedback.

Cheers...
