Ummm... trilogy? I must admit that I've not seen this called part of a trilogy before... it's the third out of a rather lengthy series of books that are all interconnected, with the overall title of "The Biography of the Life of Manuel" (sometimes shortened -- incorrectly -- to "The Biography of Manuel"; I say "incorrectly" because, despite the statement at Wiki, it isn't a redundancy, as it refers to the "life" that is Manuel... in all his "lives"):

The Biography of Manuel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: Book Hauls!

Well interestingly enough I have albeit a littel loosely so-named, so there! *POUTS*..... Actually I think they've run out of tar and feathers for today....

EDIT: This is not to suggest it's not part of a longer affair but that people have referred to it in that way before.

Re: Book Hauls!

Elric of Melnibone
The Sailor on the Seas of Fate
The Weird of the White Wolf
The Vanishing Tower
The Bane of the Black Sword
Storm Bringer
The Eternal Champion
The Silver Warriors

All by Michael Moorcock, for a grand total of 3 dollars. Unfortunately, they all have library stickers and I could only get the stickers off of one of them (the others all began to rip and I quickly stopped).

Re: Book Hauls!

Just received a copy of issue #170 of New Worlds, with stories by Ballard, Kit Reed, Keith Roberts, etc. I came across a listing for several issues and, as the few I had been able to find over the years have disappeared, decided to go for what I could....

Hilman #41 ? Whats that ? You didnt want the new masterwork collection of the series ? Or is the only the short story ?

Whichever Dying Earth is a great story. Hope you enjoy it.

Re: Book Hauls!

Hillman is the publisher of the first edition. It has the classic cover found here:

The Dying Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Very rare and hard to find. I've seen it sell for $400 if it's in Fine condition like mine is

That was a lucky find, I have seen it go for a lot more than that, which is a lot of money for a paperback.

Last book received was Eight Black horses by Ed McBain, an 87th Precinct book, like CSI i suppose.

Not even close. McBain's 87th series are some of the best police procedural novels around, and the members of the 87 are a quirky bunch, to say the least. The series is, IMO, much more entertaining than any of the police shows such as CSI, etc., that have been done, and the characters are much more memorable (though not necessarily immediately -- but you soon get to know them very well indeed). As for the antagonist in this one, "the Deaf Man"... this was (iirc) his fourth appearance in the series; each time he became a little nastier. In this one, he most certainly isn't playing around. A very good, well-constructed thriller. In fact, the previous novel in the series, Lightning, is one of the few instances where McBain actually leaves you with an ending leading into the following book.

McBain's 87 books have their faults, but on the whole I'd highly recommend them....

Wasnt there a TV series in the late 90s based on McBains books?

There was a series of t.v. movies, at any rate -- adaptations of Lightning, Ice, and Heatwave; there was also a film based on Fuzz, with quite a good cast (Yul Brynner played the Deaf Man in that one, for instance). Speaking of which, if you've forgotten who he was, you're in for an interesting ride. His first appearance in the series was, iirc, in The Heckler (1960 -- four years into the series). He's made several appearances over the years: Fuzz (1968), Let's Hear it for the Deaf Man! (1972), Eight Black Horses (1985), Mischief (1993), and Hark! (2004)

As for my own book haul:

New Worlds #5 (ed. Michael Moorcock and Charles Platt; when NW had gone from being published as a magazine to a (semi-)regular series of paperback anthologies)
New Worlds SF #s 148, 160, 169, 172....

Slave by Mende Nazer (for my book group - supposed to be fantastic but harrowing)
Salisbury History Around Us - John Chandler
