Re: The end of an era...

I thought it was brilliant series, not as good a s some of the original dr. who's but still brilliant.

I'm thinking in the next series you find out that Jack created the time agency after he was left and wiped his own memory to help him save the doctor... or something like that

I thoroughly enjoyed the series, Christopher Eccleston will be sadly missed. He introduced me to the world of the doctor, and I await the CHRISTMAS INVASION!

Re: The end of an era...

I think the new Dr Who was brilliant! Christopher Eccleston definatley takes the cake on this one (closly followed by Peter Davison). He really did bring the serioes back to life and I think he and Billie Piper worked really well together on screen. I hope the new Doctor is gonna be as good. Has anyone thought about what he's going to wear?

As for Jack, as long as he's in the next series i'm happy. He provides a good second companion with all of the know how of the up to data technology! I like teh idea of him starting off the time agents- good one WarlikeMenelaos!

Re: The end of an era...

I'm in Australia and we've just seen the first season, and I thought it was fantastic. I really had some reservations when I heard they were doing a new series, but it has really surpassed even the faintest hopes I had. Eccleston was perfect as the doctor, and the writing was top notch.

On a side note we are also being treated to reruns of the original series and have just finished the Tom Baker years. Couldn't believe it, we lost two doctors in one week!

Re: The end of an era...

Well i'm a huge fan of Doctor Who especially the classic series and i watched the first 3 or so episodes of the recent series with Christopher Ecclestone then stopped watching because it felt too modern for me...i mean yes technology and time do move on and it should improve and the episodes where good but i like the classic series with the wobbly sets and fake monsters...thats how i see Doctor Who...not in a downgraded way obviously but thats how i liked it.
I may watch the next series with Tennant but upto now i'm sticking with the classics on UKTV Gold.

Re: The end of an era...

Well, I agree with Rincewind.
I watched the original Dr Who, then the next series, both of which I really enjoyed.
After watching a couple of episodes from the latest series I found I was very disappointed!
I do watch SF movies and read a SF book now and again, so it's not just a case of a Fantasy fan being biased! I feel that I have kept up with the times, in most areas including some technology, so it is not because I didn't understand it either.
For me, Ecclestone was not Dr Who and what I saw of this series just didn't seem right. Simple as that.

Re: The end of an era...

This was by far the best Doctor Who, IMO. I liked the other series, I mean, I grew up watching the Doctor every Saturday night (except Sylvester McCoy. I couldn't get on with that one.), though I've never been what you would call a big fan. I don't know the ins and outs like some, but I know what I like, and this series was it! As for David Tennant being any good, only time will tell. but this is what he's wearing....

Re: The end of an era...

Interestingly enough, at WorldCon they had a Dr Who discussion/debate/retrospective and took a straw poll of the audience of who they thought was the best Doctor. Tom Baker had the greatest show of hands and Ecclestone had quite a sparse showing. But, in contradiction to what might be deduced from this, the new series was very well received by the audience and participants. One panellist made an observation that you grow up with a specific doctor and that becomes your favourite. I tend to agree - which means, in a few years time Ecclestone will probably become a firm favourite if a similar poll were taken then.

All in all, it was a most enjoyable and entertaining discussion (and quite well attended)

I think Tom Baker is a favourite of many people because he played the Doctor for the longest time and people got to know him better than any others.

i miss Chris E already. he's my all time fave actor, i just about died when i heard he was doing Dr Who, like all my christmases had come at once! i understand why he didn't want to stick around for another season, but damn it would have been nice! the new guy looks like he'll be good, but no one will ever match Chris in my eyes

Re: The end of an era...

Chrisopher Eccleston is the Doctor.
I would never have dreamed of sitting down to seriously watch any episode of Doctor Who (sorry, but I grew up in the '80s.) The trailors for the ninth doctor looked fantastic though so I thought I would give it a chance. I was hooked by the second episode. I like the new feel to Doctor Who ~ it is more modern which relates it to todays viewers, which I think it needed after all the cheesy 1980's stuff. I am so looking forward to Christmas day ... presents? turkey? Pah! I can't wait to see the Doctor Who christmas special!
I'm not sure about Tennent, but I'm still going to give the new series a chance ... anything where a preppy guy is cool is cool with me :-) (Tennent even wears ... canvas shoes(?)
Okay, so the ninth doctor brought in a new style, but it's not the end of an era ~ it's the beginning of a new one!

Re: The end of an era...

I enjoyed the last series of Dr Who, although I really do feel that it lost out with not having the regular cliff hanger endings that it such a must see in the past - really feel modern audiences have missed out on that one.

Was never too sure about Tennent but after seeing him in in the recent Secret Smile on ITV I am convinced by his acting ability.
