The 1989 Batman had a very dark aspect to it too, but left after the first movie. The villians tend to be very campy. (The word "villian" has a campy aspect to it) The dark quality to the films need to stay there.

Nope, the second Batman (Batman Returns) film was one of the darkest in the series.

Batman Returns was the darkest of the Bat films to date. So dark in fact, the studio wanted something more kid friendly for the next one, which is why Keaton bowed out. He didnt like the lighter approach in the script.
