any recommendations! - Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles: forums

hiya all,

Well at the moment I've just finished The Novice by Trudi Canavan (which was better than the magicians guild but still not as good as i was hoping) and I'm going to buy the high lord tomorrow ('cause kinda gotta finish the trilogy), but my problem is that I finished the novice in a day, and i figure i ll finish the highlord in about the same space of time.

so....can anyone reccomend any good fantasy books, I typically like my fantasy books to have quite a lot of magic in them, preferably mythical creatures too like dragons, errmmmm what else....

well im not too fussy, its jus im gonna need a few things to read! so pls any recommendations would be appreciated

you realize that your opening yourself up to a flood of recommendation with not being picky...

My suggestion is Kate Elliott's Crown of Star Series, first book to read in this series is King's Dragon.

I'd recommend "Magician" by Raymond E Fiest or some of the early "Dragonlance" books by Margaret Weiss

The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The Axis Trilogy by Sara Douglas is also great - though I dont believe there are any dragons.

Oh, and of course Tolkien's LOTR.

hehe, well im a HUGE dragonlance fan (read practically anything that has raistlin in it

), and read magician, even though i didnt love it - not enough magic and spells for my liking!

Have a look at the Black Company by Glen Cook. A good dose of magic and spells. And one of the most funniest wizard couple in fantasy history.

Try The Halfblood Cronicles by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey.
Elvenbane, Elvenblood, and Elvenborn
Elves, smart and cunning dragons, plus a lot of magic.
I like the same type of books too.

Garth Nix's Abhorsen series is a great trilogy, you should be sure to check that out.

Some of Nancy Farmer's works:
House of the Scorpion (Not exactly a fantasy but still great!)
Sea of Trolls
and many others!

Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, the first book, Eragon, is already out, and the second, Eldest, will come out this August.

What exactly are you looking for? I enjoyed the Sword of Truth novels, lots of mythical creatures and magic there, though some people didn't enjoy the later novels.

Of course, I'd recommend mine - The Elder Staves - lots of magic, but sadly no dragons.

I'm not quite sure lol. I'm just interested in a good read, I normally just choose a book based on its cover, its blurb and the first couple of pages - sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't! So trying a new method here lol

Alia was right you're certainly opening up a can of worms when you say you're not too picky on fantasy books.

*NB From what you've said from my list I'd say you may most enjoy:

Tad Willaims Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy plenty of magic and intrigue.

Greg Keyes Kingdom Of Thorn and Bone series. Quite a bit of magic and some magical creatures.

Kate Elliott's Crown Of Stars series. Reasonable amount of magic in it no real dragons as such but good series.

Cecilia Dart Thornton's Bitterbynde trilogy Plenty of unusual magical creatures although the old style language they use can be a little hard to get used to.

Tony Shillitoe's Ashuak Chronicles. Currently reading this and certainly has quite a lot of dragons in it.

LOTR I'm sssuming you've read but make sure you check out the Hobbit too if you haven't already.

Terry Brooks Shannara series. Lots of dwarves, trolls etc and plenty of wizards/druids and magic but no real dragons as such.

Well, I'm obviously gonna recommend Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, starting with "Gardens of the Moon", but I always do, so theres not much point in saying it again

What you might wanna try is Chris Wooding's "Braided Path" series (the first is "The Weavers of Saramyr") or anything by Neil Gaiman. He's a bit of a different author, but extremely good

"American Gods" is particularly readable
