Re: Gemmell Movie?

Personally, I'd probably prefer it if Gemmell wrote an original screen play with all new characters and cast it himself.

If they made films of any of his books, I'd watch them but I'm sure I'd be dissapointed.

Re: Gemmell Movie?

for druss i think that he would have to be quite short. probably about 5'10"ish he'd have to be really stocky but more bunched muscle than ripped and his voice would have to be low and commanding and does anyone else agree that he sounds a little scottish, he does say laddie alot?!?! good luck finding that character

Re: Gemmell Movie?

It would have to be waylander or legend. Also i think the rigante books would be brilliant as well. Though i would rather not see them as films. I mean look what happened with LOTR, Jackson editing/changing/moving/inventing things to 'appeal to the masses'. You can visualise it so much better by yourself reading, it's your interpretation. Movies are about watching somebody elses interoretation, it's just never as good.

Re: Gemmell Movie?

Yeah, books are always better than the movie, imo. If a DG book was done for the screen it would have to be Legend to start with I think. Theres a thousand reasons why. And someone else might have a thousand reasons why not. So, always better to read the book instead. Cant argue with what the author describes for you. And you cant so quickly dislike a character in a book because of how they look: you dont know how they look. By the time you think you know what they look like youre in some way attached to the character, you know the person, so its a whole different ball-game

Re: Gemmell Movie?

The Rock.... maybe. Definately the Rigante books but you would lose a lot in film form unless they followed the book down to the word. If you were going to watch it you would have to read the book first so you do know the characters. There would be some great battle scenes though.

Maybe Viggo Mortinssen as Connavar...maybe.

Re: Gemmell Movie?

dont think rock could do it much justice, he cant act so all you would see is the rock trying to beat people up while talking through the middle bits, i also think druss should be shorter that the rock and possibly wider, but it depends on everyones own picture of him and the book you use, he'd be no good for druss in legend as he was much older. ill try and think of a character for him and then you can see if i'm close.

Re: Gemmell Movie?

I've discussed this many times with DG fans. I always thought Legend would be a good place to start - although being DG's favourite it would be hard on him if things went sour.

Anyway, in a perfect world I'd go for the following castings:

Druss - John Rhys Davies / or a no name
Rek - Joachim Phoenix (from gladiator)
Bowman - ?
Bricklyn - Alan Rickman (??) maybe not
Caessa - Jessica Alba
Nogusha - The Rock
Ulric - Ken Watanabe
Calvar Syn -
Dun Elicas - Joel Edgerton (Gawain from King Arthur)
Hogan - Ioan Gruffudd (Lancelot)
Earl Delnar - Pete Posthelwaite
Virae - Katee Sackhoff
Orrin - maybe Sean Austin... not sure
Joachim - Art Malik
Menahem -
Nosta Khan - ?
Serbitar - Adrian or Neil Rayment (matrix twins)
Vintar - Gabriel Byrne (although he'd need bleach)

Re: Gemmell Movie?

I wasnt sure about the rock as an actor at first, he is ok but I cannot connect with him as a serious actor... maybe that has something to do with seeing his persona as a wrestler?

As long as they dont cast someone like Arnold Swartz... I will be happy.

I can see Rigante made into a TV series actually. You wouldn't need too many sfx, and you could film it in either America, England or Oz.

Re: Gemmell Movie?

I reckon Brian Blessed, or Brendan Gleeson (Hamish from Braveheart) would make an excellent Druss.
