Battlestar Galatica: A Direct DVD Movie Continuation Release

With the grand success of the first season of the new Battlestar Galatica series, I am pleased how it played out. The season finale was one of best I've seen in a long time. While I am a fan of the version of Galatica, I'm also a fan of the 1978 original series. Galatica creator Glen A. Larson has made frequent public announcements that he has gone to great lengths to purchase the movie rights, which he does in fact possess.

However, Universal does not want to release a motion picture continuation of the original series because they fear it will confuse comtemporary audiences. Plus, the fact that Larson hasn't had a hit in several years makes the possibility of seeing a movie continuation even more unlikely. Still, there is a chance for this to come to fruition: a direct DVD movie continuation release. Considering how well the original series did for it's DVD sales (it was part of the top ten), it's reasonable enough to produce a Battlestar Galatica movie continuation featuring Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Herb Jefferson Jr. and the rest of the surviving cast members, as well as featuring new characters for a modest budget.

The best way to do it would be to use most of props from the new series such as the "old" vipers as way of cutting costs. The uniforms, however, would either have to be recreated, or retrived from the studio. In addition, the original fleet which has been recreated for the new series can be incorporated in the movie. And as far as I know, Lee Stringer has a beautiful original Galactica model.

This would in no way interfere with the current series and can be looked at as an alternate history of Galatica. And in a straight to DVD release there is less chance that the studio heads would fear their new series being overshadowed. While this would not be a big budget feature, shows like Babylon 5 proved that you don't need a huge budget to tell a great story.

Personally I think the original Battlestar Galatica deserves better, but the prospects of seeing a movie continuation for the big screen looks very bleak, therefore, a straight to DVD is our last and best hope. Most importantly, it's a realistic goal to achieve. It's up to us fans to convince the big boys in Universal that a direct to DVD production will be profitable. Futhermore, we need to promote and boost up the sales on the BSG: The Complete Epic series boxset. The more the Boxset sells, the better our chances are. For those who are interested in seeing a direct DVD movie continuation of Galatica and want to help in seeing it come to realization, check out the following link for more information:
