It was a book I read in the 70,s about a world that had destroyed its robots and kept the skulls with the positronic brains as mementos. The hero finds that all these brains are still functional but trapped in their skulls

I don't know the book, but positronic is a word invented by Issac Azimov and so I suggest that is the first place to look.

Yes I have, but it was not one of his. The thing is I could be making the positronic bit up now as it's been that long.

It rings a bell with me, but I can't remember the title - I've a vague feeling it may have been by Clifford Simak
