In which I awkwardly announce my presence Um... hi, everyone. I'm a uni student in engineering and computer science in Sydney. Used to write on and off in high school, and I've finally decided to get back into it properly. So expect to see me asking for advice in the coming months, and trying (poorly) to give some! Sci-fi is my usual passion, starting with Heinlein (Starship Troopers) and Hamilton (Pandora's Star), and most recently including Hannu Rajaniemi (The Quantum Thief). Fantasy, too - I'm a long-time fan of Tolkien, and recently read A Song of Ice and Fire (well, up to the fourth!). Aside from that, John le Carre is probably my favourite author at the moment. I'm really glad I found these forums - even after a day or two I can tell the community is top-notch.

| Laundress Extraordinaire | Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence ... bake me a cake as fast as you can! I need it to welcome this new writer to our little corner of heaven. | Goblin Princess | Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence Wherein we Respond with a hearty Welcome! It sounds like you've already had a look around, so I won't direct you to the grand tour. Instead, since you've started writing again, I'll mention our monthly writing challenge -- a story written in 75 words or less to a chosen theme and genre. It's a fantastic way to stretch your writing muscles and get to know the rest of our writing community. If you are interested, there is still plenty of time to take part in this month's challenge: http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum...ead-first.html |

Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence Welcome, Bakerman. I too am here for advice even though I'm a little more farther along with what I'm working on. The advice that I can give you is that you will receive conflicting advice. This is just life and, as in real life, you'll probably have to sort it out for yourself in the end. But here, you'll at least find a starting point...maybe much more. It's not as scary as all that. I'm a writer. It's my job to get all dramatic!

Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence Alex: I removed it all before posting. The joy of nonlinear editing platforms! hopewrites: the name is from a Midnight Oil song. I'd link you if I were allowed to ;P. Teresa: very tempting. 75 words may just fit into my exam schedule! TomS and Vertigo: thanks for the welcomes .

Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence A strange word that - awkward. Say it ten times and it's nonsensical. 'I threw an awk ward at the approaching goblins' Or an 'Orc ward' even. Welcome to the best of the best: as TomS says you'll get conflicting advice, but you'll get a consensus that will help you enormously!

Re: In which I awkwardly announce my presence A warm welcome to the Chrons, Bakerman. ![]() Apart from science fiction we share a liking for le Carre, at least as far as his Smiley novels are concerned, anyway.
