Just starting to write my first sci-fi book and looking for some advice. Hope to have some great alks with you all.

How about the advice 'this site is dangerously time consuming, it could seriously reduce the quantity of words applied to paper – or electronic equivalent – even while improving the quality'? Ah, not that sort of advice, then, nor one suspects 'run for your life, your doom is upon you'?

It's true, though. Abandon sleep, all ye who enter here. As a writer (or potential writer, or whatever) you presumably hand around the "aspiring writers" corner; have you noticed the writing challenges yet? Just asking.

Oh yes, welcome in. You may already have discovered that one or two of the residents are not entirely average – might even be classed as a trifle odd, by this texting, infinitive-splitting generation. You don't actually have to attempt to match them.

Did you by any chance bring your sanity with you, or Pringles? Both involve mild danger, but fear not, everyone here (for a given value of everyone which, given the general diversity here, might not be as universal as some places) is friendly and polite, and you should be feeling quite at home after only a few small drinks…

Yes, hang around the Aspiring Writers section. But venture out to other parts of the forum as well. There are some neat discussions going on out there.
