Arabian Nights style fantasy...

I'm curious about non-European fantasy novels, series, etc that are in English. Specifically Arabian Nights style fantasy, but African, Asian or anything else wold be a welcome change of pace.

Thanks in advance everyone who posts.

Have posted this elsewhere, but too lazy to go looking for the links! Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Rose of the Prophet trilogy should be right in your wheelhouse, Fishbowl. And welcome to The Chrons, by the way.

The Arabian Nightmare by Robert Irwin is excellent. Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed has been getting positive reviews.

The Tales of the Otori series, by Lian Hearn, is a great little pseudo-Japanese fantasy. And beautifully written.

The Flat Earth novels by Tanith Lee have an Arabian Nights flavor.

Re: Arabian Nights style fantasy...

Depending on whether you want strictly modern works or not, you might want to look at F. Marion Crawford's Khaled, George Meredith's The Shaving of Shagpat, Joy Chant's set of novels beginning with Red Moon and Black Mountain, Ernest Bramah's Kai Lung stories, and so forth. All written by Europeans/Americans, but none centering on European settigs. And then there's always the grandaddy of 'em all when it comes to such things, The History of the Caliph Vathek, by William Beckford....

For something a bit more recent (though Chant's novels were relatively recent, come to that) you might try Barry Hughart's Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox:

The Master of Izindi is a kind of Arabian Nights/Journey to the West book.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, but it's important to note that it's written in the old style (ie more fantasy adventure than grim and gritty realism).

I forgot to say that I second The Desert of Souls as a good, fun read.

It also has the virtue of being recently published, so easy to find a copy.

This book was quality historical sword and sandal set in medieval Arabian Egypt. Scott Oden is one of the best historical adventure,S&S writers that isnt a big name. Him and Howard Jones of Desert of Souls are pretty acclaimed.

Not read it, but can confirm to hearing good things about the latter of the two.

Re: Arabian Nights style fantasy...

I remember reading a good fantasy novel set in Baghdad back in the early 1980s, but I can't remember what it was called or who wrote it.
