Casterly Rock and Asshai

Two prominent hubs and seats of power mentioned frequently in all five books, but always in passing. When do you think are we going to see these geographic locations feature more significantly in the story? In TWoW? In ADoS?

I know that Jaime had dreams of fighting old ghosts alongside Brienne in Casterly Rock, but I'm not sure whether that's a premonition or just a dream, so I'm hoping C.R is going to feature in TWoW.

Ashai being such a far away exotic place doesn't really have a horse in the race when it comes to the war-torn continent of Westeros, it's as far removed from Westerosi politics as the Medieval Ming Dynasty was from European politics and their interfactional fighting, so I doubt they will feature politically, outside of the single figure that is Melissandre.

Since it's close to the real birth-place of all dragons, it would be interesting to see Victarion rejected by Dany, only for him to then sail across the Jade Sea and into the shadow lands with his Valyrian horn. Imagine if he managed to catch a surviving dragon from that area......but that would probably upset the whole story-line.

Oh well, I know that's not going to happen anyways, from the horse's mouth: "Kind of at the other end of the world. I'm not sure if we'll actually ever go to Asshai. You may learn more about it through Melisandre or other people remembering it or talking about it"

Which of the "other lands or cities" fascinate you most?

Nothing fascinates me more than Braavos, but a close second is Old Town. GRRM has said he hopes to write more stories outside of ASOIAF about these lands, I dearly hope we can get some short stories or novels about either of those.

Re: Casterly Rock and Asshai

I know we have been there already, but I find the Iron Islands to be very interesting. I just like how each island has its own sense of importance (or lack thereof) and it's own lord or ruler. Not to mention just how different the iron islanders are from the rest of the world. They seem to breed bad a--es. They are a serious people.

One place I really don't care to see or have mentioned is the Reach and High garden. I know they boast a pretty strong army, and some of the tyrells are interesting, but nothing about it appeals to me. They have the worst Words apart from the Lannisters, and their bastards deffinately got short changed on their bastard name of Flowers.

Re: Casterly Rock and Asshai

Regarding Flowers, at least there's a collective noun for them: bunch. (Would they be the Wild Bunch of Flowers, or the bunch of wild Flowers?)

I suppose one could have:
  • a yard of Sand, suggesting that they don't know whether they're coming or going;
  • a range of Hills;
  • a pile of Stones, which is why they're not going to take the seat of government (not without a ring of power...);
  • a drift of Snow, which seems to describe Jon's position, adrift, rather well;
The rest are either very tenuous (you'd not want to be a foul Waters, not when the collective name for waterfowl is knob), non-existent (Storm, Blackfyre?), or secret ("Don't tell him, Pyke"**).

** - If you've never seen Dad's Army, you won't know what I'm referring to here. Sorry.

There's always Greywater Watch, the Castle of Plot Secrets.

I'm sure we'll see Casterly Rock. I think Tyrion will go there at some point. I also think that Edmure and his wife and their future child being sent there will have some significance, though I'm not sure why. Perhaps some King or Queen will recruit him to bring the riverlands onto their side.

Re: Casterly Rock and Asshai

agreed. If the end of aDwD is any indication, it should be a royal mess.

I don't think we will ever get a good look at GreyWater Watch, but we damn well better get to meet Howland Reed soon.

SERIOUSLY!!!

Re: Casterly Rock and Asshai

I have an inkling that we are going to see 'the land of always winter', because that has to be the HQ of the Others, and if they are evil incarnate, then the only way of rooting them out permanently is to destroy their stronghold.

All the kingdoms, houses, cities, religions, etc have a representative in the story, but the Others remain a complete mystery, very creepy.

I'm not actually an Okie. Our great nation just keeps sending me here to blow up large swaths of countryside.
