| For years I've been looking for a juvenile/YA book I read in the late 1990's. I remember very little, but I'll do my best. The story starts on Earth with a teenage boy coming back home from a plane trip. Shortly thereafter, at the boy's house, he's visited by a government (?) official who takes him from his family on Earth and onto a spaceship or spacestation. I don't remember the reason for this. The spaceship/spacestation is computer-controlled, I think, so there's no crew on board. The boy is all alone on the ship except for a sarcastic and snarky robot. Later, the boy discovers a girl on the ship. I think she was locked in a room on the ship that was like some sort of animal habitat. The girl is somewhat wild or feral and is roughly the same age as the boy. The boy releases her from the room and they decide to try and escape. I vaguely remember them taking sheets from the laundry and tying them in a rope to try and climb out of the ship. The edition I read was hardcover or turtleback and the cover was of the boy, girl, and robot climbing out of the spaceship on a rope. I hope someone knows what I'm talking about! Thank you! |
