I pick up The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson.

...and open it at random, reading aloud the third sentence of the page on the left.

I open it up to page 757 and read the following sentence: 'His gaze searched the stone at her feet like shame or pleading.'

Not surprised to find that the random sentence has a simile in it! I've never read an author that uses so many similes as Stephen Donaldson.
