I notice that for the most part the calendar only lists birthdays. Could we get the various challenges listed on there as well? open and closing dates for entries and- or open and closing dates for the polls?

The calendar is not normally used on chrons, and in fact is normally removed from the nav links - the fact that it's currently there is simply due to running a default template option, so I'll aim to remove it again.
