May's Fantasy Suggestions

April's book was an older one and therefore several members had difficulties finding a copy. Let's try and move to a newer title, perhaps some new author you'd like to discover or an exciting book you've heard about but haven't read yet. Make your suggestions. (reminder, one suggestion per member please!)

Re: May's Fantasy Suggestions

I want you guys to read this book, so I'm going to suggest it every month until it wins.

Myst - The Book of Atrus. Seriously, this is a very good unconventional fantasy read. PLEASE give it a go.

Tales of Neveryon by Samuel R. Delany

Another book I found in my dad's boxes. Haven't read anything else by this author but hes very talented and the cover says hes a four-time winner of the Nebula award. Extremely vivid and realistic, my only complaint is that its too short and I cant seem to find anything else by him.

The Gift by Alison Croggon.

This book is listed as The Naming on Amazon, I think it's been published under a different name for the UK market
However, I was able to get a copy from my library.

Can anyone suggest?

If so, then I suggest Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson. I've been wanting to read that, and this is an good excuse.

I'll second that, even though the book has neither gardens nor a moon in it. Seriously, fantasists looking for titles, lift your game.

You what? Fool Crockus and Sorry talk about the Gardens of the Moon, and the azath house is in a big garden
And, erm, Moon's Spawn?

Everything becomes vague and monstrous in that book. The bit at the party *SOME SPOILERS POSSIBLY* is just wandering about, with monsters popping-up. How am I supoposed to remember something about gardens of the Moon amidst all that? I maintain the inappropriateness of that title. That and the fact that, at 700 pages, it still read like the Reader's Digest version.

But a good book, nonetheless.

Re: May's Fantasy Suggestions

I would suggest The Death of the Necromancer, by Martha Wells. This is a fantasy novel and also a mystery, set in a parallel Europe in a city very similar to London, with roughly a nineteenth century level of technology. It follows a master thief on a quest to avenge his murdered godfather, and meanwhile a powerful dark wizard is plotting something (not clear what). I read the first half last year, and then I had to give my copy back to the library. Since then I've been looking for a good excuse to actually buy a copy of my own.

A Sword for the Immerland King, by F.W. Faller ( I believe) was good, its interesting, a bit confusing. It had a lot to do with fate and destiny. It surprised me.
