Re: Musical Misconceptions

wookie - whoa, whoa, whoa. Seriously, Iron Maiden the worst? You must be joking. Black metal and death metal are for musicians who can't play their instruments properly and don't know how to write proper songs. Think about it this way most black metal bands out there credit Iron Maiden as their main influences, as is the same for normal metal bands as well. Reason being, Iron Maiden was one of the first pioneering bands to incorporate a darker and sinister tone in their music. Bands that really think they are God's gift to the metal world are bands like Killswitch Engage and God Forbid. They all have the same vocals (screamo) and try to fit in as many notes into a song as possible. Bruce may not be able to scream like those guys, but not all music is about screaming to get your emotions across, screaming for the sake of keeping up with the loud guitars just proves that singing is not the guys forte. Anyway, I am a die hard Maiden fan, I like some black metal and death metal but I prefer Thrash and Speed metal. Bands I would throw into the mix are:

Black Metal: Satyricon, Cradle of Filth and some Dimmu Borgir.
Death Metal: Some Cannibal Corpse, Vader.

I prefer my metal to be artful and well crafted and not to make my ears bleed all the time.

wookie - I do agree with you about the masses being sheep for manufactured pop icons like Justin Bieber and the rest. Cut and paste loops and voice editing to keep the voice in tune, that is an IT profession, not musicicanship.

As for R&B... To me that's Rhythm & Blues: searing (or perhaps in the context of these forums that should be seering) blues guitar getting down and dirty with fat chunky bass riffs overlaid with smoky vocals, not some teenaged soul singer getting funky with a tune that would run away screaming at the sound of a blues guitar...

But maybe I'm just getting old.
I completely concur... today's so-called R&B is basically pop music, when the music industry realises that the happier I'll be.

Ne yo R&B? Chris Brown R&B? Alesha Dixon R&B? Aaliyah R&B? Destiny's Child R&B? Beyoncé R&B? (well maybe her solo debut Work It Out *just* qualifies)

The list is endless and it's all just your everyday pop music, it's original roots may be based in the R&B, Soul and Motown tracks of old but it's evolved into modern day pop music.

This doesn't mean I dislike the modern day R&B genre but I agree that it is incorrectly labelled R&B.

xx

Re: Musical Misconceptions

I'm thinking maybe Bob Marley may have been a bit misunderstood at least inasmuch as some fans being unaware of the kind of life he lived and the transformation he went through from gangster to reggae star.

Re: Musical Misconceptions

I'm not a fan of most rap, or whatever passes as r&b these days, but once in awhile someone will get it right, like this guy.
