Re: Who would think such a thing? Well the only male POV characters we have in ACOK are Maester Cressen, Bran, Jon, Tyrion, Davos and Theon. You've already ruled out Bran and Tyrion. I don't think it was Jon because you said the "thinker" was referring to or thinking of a child, and he was a bit preoccupied with Ygritte in this volume. That leaves us with Maester Cressen, Davos and Theon. I'm thinking Maester Cressen, only because you said this one was obscure. That's a wild guess though, I haven't the foggiest idea whom he might've been referring to if I'm right. I'd have to look it up.

Re: Who would think such a thing? Whew....I don't think we ever would've got that one if you hadn't spoon fed it to us. LOL Okay I need to break away from my Storm of Swords theme, so I'll look up a good one from one of the other books and post one later tonight (it's lunchtime here).

Re: Who would think such a thing? It is indeed Ned Stark! He was not referring to Gendry, however. He was referring to Stannis. This was shortly after Robert's death in AGOT and the small council was discussing what steps would need to be taken until the king's heir came of age, not knowing Ned had dispatched a letter to Stannis informing him that Joffrey was not Robert's trueborn son and therefore he was the rightful successor to the Iron Throne. Sidebar: I was determined to pull a "thought" from AGOT but it was absurdly difficult! It appears that in his first volume GRRM did not rely as much on the thought device as in later volumes. It seems nearly half of ADWD takes place in some person's head. In any case, excellent work, Yossarian, you're up!
