A question about Bronn

During episode 9 Tyrion and Bronn and Shae play a game of questions. Tyrion guesses he has been north of the wall, Bronn drinks and says for business.
Did I miss this in the book?I wonder how significant that will be.
Is he a Wildling? a Deserter ?

Good question, I caught that too. I hope the experts here can enlighten us.

Re: A question about Bronn

There are bards, both in Westeros and Esteros, that sing a ballad about a boy with a flat top box that I have always assumed was Bronn.

Apparently he never picked cotton, and knew John Henry.

While the lyrics change a bit, the first verse is:

"I was totin' my pack along the dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

But in all seriousness....good question. I do think Tyrion asked, and did get the affirmative.

Brighter minds will let us know.

I just haven't been able to do a Johnny Cash reference all day...this thread was ripe.

It could just have been aboard on of the ships. the black brothers trade for their food and stuff as well. And it easy to get beyond the wall at the sea.

Re: A question about Bronn

I believe he was there as a mercenary. While he does seem to prefer wearing black and fights in a no-nonsense style like I imagine the Night's Watch does, it just seems off for him to be a sworn brother, even if he used to be one. You would think Stark would've had his head.

Re: A question about Bronn

I'm inclined to agree with Syphon, that he was there as a mercenary. Maybe he was protecting people who were trading with the Wildlings or something like that. I doubt Bronn was ever a member of the Nights Watch or a wildling himself.

I'm thinking that they're setting things up for a "beyond the wall" info dump in season two. When we need to know more about the Wildlings as Jon's storyline plays out, hey, there's Bronn who can conveniently tell us all about them (maybe in idle chat with Tyrion about the time he visited The Wall or something like that).

I believe that Syphon is correct and that Mesanna just hit it right on the head. Yay for exposition!
