Jeff Conaway 5.10.1950 - 27.3.2011 (Zack Allan)

It was announced today that actor Jeff Conaway passed away after a short period in an induced coma.

Conaway was a rare actor, not just known for one successful role and a multitude of others, but had three major successes.

Perhaps most famously he played Kinickie alongside Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in Grease, followed by a three year stint in the successful comedy Taxi, playing Bobby Wheeler. (He was fired from the show for drug abuse after his third year)

On the SF front he claimed his third role, playing Sergeant Zack Allan in Babylon 5. Apparently being one of those actors who did not need to work, thanks to the income for Grease but when it was known he was a fan of the series he was offered the role of Allan as a one off. His enthusiasm for the show was such that he just stuck around right to the end!

It seems that he was popular with all the people he worked with, marrying Olivia Newton Johns sister (and divorcing later). He had a long ongoing drug problem, a battle he had fought his whole life. Many of his co-stars stood by him, Travolta doing his best to help Conaway with his addictions; while Tony Danza and Marilu Henner kept vigil through his last days.

Conaway was found unconscious in his Apartment on 11th May having suffered an apparent drug overdose, it has been claimed that it was medication that aspirated into his lung, that led to pneumonia and sepsis.

He was placed in an induced coma in order for his body to fight the illnesses, but never woke up. His family had life support switched off in the early hours of the 26th May, and he passed away the next day.

He becomes the third main Babylon 5 cast member to pass away at a far too young age, joining Andreas Katsulas - G'Kar (cancer, 59 years) and Richard Biggs - Stephen Franklin (Heart failure (44 years)

"Well, it's not a job, it's more like an adventure. A chance to fight the bad guys."

RIP.

Jeff Conway.

Jeff Conway has died at the age of 60. Although he was in a fair few films, I will always remember him in his role in Babylon 5.

You are with the First Ones now Jeff so rest in peace.

RIP Jeff. Sad to see another good one go.

Nice obit Perpetual Man, but you forgot Tim Choate. He appeared in four episodes as Zathras, and he died in September 2004 less than a month before his 50th birthday.

Very true, manephelien. He might not have been a regular but Zathras was a great character, brought to life wonderfully by Tim Choate, and he was indeed taken far too soon.

Once upon a time I remember a show called Wizards and Warriors and he was the star of it. It ran for only one season. Maybe I am looking back with rose tinted glasses, but I loved it. RIP Jeff.

Ah, sad indeed, may he voyage onwards.

Never knew he had been in Grease, or Taxi, though!

And interestingly enough those two things are what the mainstream media are remembering him for...

Re: Jeff Conaway 5.10.1950 - 27.3.2011 (Zack Allan)

I watched the decline of Jeff's health on the show Celebrity Rehab. It was sad to see that he needed help badly, and to watch his worthless girl friend just hang him for money. She smuggled in drugs for him one day, he was half concious after taking them and had to be rushed to a hospital to save his life. I began to suspect she was trying to kill him in order to get his money, this made me think of two friends who died from an overdose which was caused by strong drugs given to them by women who they thought loved them.

I knew it was only a matter of time when Mr Conaway would meet his death, years of drug abuse have ravaged his body.
