I didn't read Ellison's story before it left Realms of Fantasy which is a shame. I thought Ponies was decent, although not as good as Kaftan's or Pelland's short stories. Johnson is on something of a hot streak for her short fiction the last few years and I wouldn't be surprised if that helped influence the judges. I think Swirsky's novella can be read online as well as several others last time I looked.
