Re: chronicles open again

That Malewarebytes program found 12 infections, inc 6 trojan's that AVG didn't find.

It makes you wonder about Norton/Mcafee/AVG, clearly they are not dong their jobs.

Well worth £16 Bryan.

Thanks

Re: chronicles open again

As these viruses seem to re-invent themselves as you delete them. I ran Malewarebytes again and I'm in the clear.

My laptop has noticeably speeded up.

Happy days...

I think your'e going to need therapy your parsonship.

In your job it's not good being addicted to anything; there again, I think you may be addicted to life.

See my blog and say a prayer for Betty

Re: chronicles open again

First off - many thanks - We know you put in massive amounts of work, but I know that I for one don't think about it till something like this happens. Seeing as everyone else is buying the beer, I'll chip in for pizza/kebabs or any grease of your choice; to be washed down by aforementioned beverages.

I ran the malware bytes thingy and it found nothing at all - what am I doing right? Or is it just not picking up on things?

Re: chronicles open again

Thanks for getting my favourite forum back online

I'm a little confused though ; how can forum member's computers be infected by malware? Does just browsing the site or posting infect your system , or would you have to download something?

There's no guarantee you would have been infected, but it's always best to play safe with a checkup.

What happened is that someone had used an exploit in one of the forum plugins to upload a script to the chrons hosting account. That script would insert code randomonly into files on the server, which created an iframe to an attack site filled with malware.

In effect, that meant that if it hit a Javascript file (which wouldn't show the code in the page source) or a template file, it would open a doorway on chronicles that had the same practical effect of you directly visiting the attack site.

The trouble is, the attack script and the malicious code injections were ain Javascript as well, and the forum software especially uses a lot of that. So tracking down the right string of alphanumeric characters, when it kept changing, proved quite challenging. Especially as it would hit any file. And it seemed able to detect if any code had been removed, or new files uploaded, and then re-add the code - without leaving any record on the server of the file having been changed.

A 'worm' is designed to spread, by contact, like measles

Re: chronicles open again

Now if someone can tell me how to search for A E Van Vogt on this forum without getting

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : A, E, Van, Vogt
as a result, I'll be REALLY impressed.

Re: chronicles open again

Hey JM -This isn't really the place a new thread is the way, however, conventional means don't seem to work and this is the only thing I've found so far:

AE van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle

and

A.E. van Vogt
