I miss Aspiring Writers...

Was a time you opened Aspiring Writers and there it was, with Critiques, Writing Resources and Workshop above. That meant I always browsed the Aspiring Writers threads before going to the others. Now, I have to actually open it (again). I'm half-convinced it's now missing passers-by...

I'm not that bothered, but why was it done? It set it apart from all the other subjects by being different in this way, seemed more welcoming, somehow.

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

There was concern that by being separate, AW was actually being missed, and not only by newcomers to the AW forum.

Because there were 3 sub-fora (Critiques, Workshop and Writing Resources), it was thought that some people didn't realise there was another bit of AW itself -- also confusingly called AW --and this was why a number of new threads ended up in Workshop when they weren't at all Workshoppy things, because people weren't sure where else to post them. Which meant yours truly and the other mods were having to haul them out of there and shove them in AW -- which cut into the time we could have been spending more profitably on scoffing tea and cake in the Staff Room.

Unless we get hold of the mis-posters and subject them to the third degree (you hold the spotlight, I'll get the knuckledusters) we'll never know if it was confusion or simply plain old-fashioned error, but anything which eliminates confusion is good. Particularly when it means I can scoff more cake.

Anyhow, look on the bright side, Boneman. At your advanced age, it's important to keep doing new things, or old things in different ways, so having to open a different thread is probably helping ward off the dementia.

Aaah, now I see.... I think...

Shouldn't that be 'sub-fori'?

I'm with your Boneman, but I thought that it was voted and decided while I was away. So I said nothing. Not a beep. Not because the people already have heard enough of my grumbling voice. But now, since this thing has already been opened, I thought that I would support you and your action in any way possible.

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

Pretty sure not sub-fori, but then I didn't go to some fancy pants (and fancy-panted...) public school** so my Latin may be out. We shall wait for pyan to pronounce on the sub-forums issues.

Meanwhile, I shall put on my subfusc, submit to the inevitable and submerge myself again.

** for the benefit of our American friends, this is not the same as your kind of public school. Think very posh private. Only with weird clothes. And weirder customs.

PS. If you're wanting to set up a "Save the Aspiring Writers Sub-Forum" can you do it quietly, please. The chanting plays havoc with my digestion. (And make sure your placards are spelled correctly.)

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

Apart from my initial puzzlement, I haven't been discomforted by the move. It seems to me that:
  • Regulars will soon find where their posts and threads have gone and will adjust accordingly.
  • As TJ says, newcomers ought to be less confused, particularly as the threads have been moved under a sub-forum title that bears a close resemblance to others (e.g. General Book Discussion, General Film Discussion).
  • Now we can use Advanced Search to look only in what used to the be Aspiring Writers sub-forum rather than the whole Aspiring Writers forum (although this is still possible); this is a real benefit to the user.

By the way, is this the right () place for this thread?

I knew something had changed! Shows how much attention I pay, and how little time I've spent here over the last couple of years

I kind of miss it; but more through nostalgia/opposition to change than anything else! I don't find myself missing anything.

What, Aspiring Writers discussing the Aspiring Writers moving around the Aspiring Writers' thread? I didn't think I was a 5th Columnist, agitating for its return, I just kinda wondered why...

I thought it might be considered to be Feedback.

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

I used to browse there, but these days I login to the User CP and see posts I've commented in that've been updated first, then I hit new posts and click anything of interest. I only go by the titles rather than which part of the forum they're in now, which means if the title is a little mundane in the 4 pages or updates I usually have, I'll miss it ;-/

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

Oh. For the last week or so I've been operating under the assumption that my existence was a dream, or some kind of VR -- the otherwise inexplicable displacement of the main Aspiring Writers board being the "flaw" that proved its unreality. Now I find it was real all along.

Re: I miss Aspiring Writers...

Forums or fora, either is correct. Fora has overtones of pedantry, though, as it's fallen further away from common usage than other irregular Latin plurals, such as stadium/stadia, or datum/data.

And moved to Feedback...
