wellie, since (1) it's an abbreviation and (2) Wellington is the only duke (the others were Earls).

Yup. Cardigan, Sandwich and Orrery were earls, Wellington was a duke.

The one about General Hooker is an urban legend - James Boswell (1740-1795), in The Life of Samuel Johnson, calls prostitutes "hookers." Hooker was born in 1814...
