I am embarking on -- or rather returning to -- a career as a freelance editor and "book doctor."

In addition to writing my own novels and short stories, I've taught classes on "Writing the Fantasy Novel," been a professional guest at numerous writing workshops, spoken at schools and in other venues, given workshops on world-building, worked as an editor at a small press magazine, and taken an active role in critique groups over the last 20+ years. I've acted as a literary consultant helping other writers to assess and improve their manuscripts, but put this aside for several years so that I could concentrate on my own fiction.

Oops, didn't see your question, TEIN. I prefer to work with writers of science fiction and fantasy, but I'll consider other genres, too, as I don't confine my own reading to speculative fiction.

Gods know I need major advice in my writing skills. Had I had pieces that were Chrons-friendly, I would post in Critiques. As it stands, though....

Well, I've had Teresa look at one of my efforts and I've got to say its been well worth every penny. She put a lot of think-time and paperwork into it, that's for sure. Not only did Teresa pinpoint all sorts of problems I barely knew I had, but also offered workable alternatives to said problems.

And that last parts a rare thing, especially when done well. Too often I'll go to workshops etc and I'll have failings identified in my story--which is marvelous, don't get me wrong--but there hasn't been many times where people subsequently offered road maps out of a narrative ditch.
She's a confidence with the subject that only well-rounded and professional experience can bring.

I'm not being paid to gush like this, honest! I'm just advising y'all that here's a writer's resource that's not only worth your real attention but is also alarmingly cheap considering the service.

Wow! Good luck with this, Teresa. It will be nice for you to get some recompense back for all the advice and help you offer for free here.

As for me, I'm still working on improving my novel since JJ critiqued it, but in the future I'd consider hiring you (right now I'm very low on money, and will be for most of the year, especially since Seph and I signed up for FantasyCon this year in Nottingham).

Would you consider looking at only half a novel, or, say, just the first six chapters? Or would you want the full story? (Presently, my novel's a beast -- 156,000+ words and counting, so I'm going to have to do some vast cutting once I finish editing it and writing new chapters.)

But I think next time I'd prefer having only the first part of my tale critiqued because a) it's cheaper, and b) right now I feel I'm addressing the weak points JJ mentioned, so I won't want a full crit when the time comes.

I'm engaged in writing a novel right now...which explains why I haven't been around here much. When it reaches a stage where it needs to be looked at, I'll keep you very much in mind.

Won't be for awhile, but I hope not a very long time, either. At the moment I'm flinging words at the page (monitor), hoping that some will stick. A lot of them will have to go away eventually, but with any luck there will be enough left to tell the story I'm trying to get out of my head (it has been nudging, and then bugging me outright, for at least a couple of years now, and I decided that it was finally time to give in and work on the thing) and into written form.

Cool, good to hear, LMA - I remember we first met many years ago as aspiring writers on the Orson Scot Card forums - it would be good to think at least one of us has been moving forward since then, as I have a lot of catching up to do!!
